News from the Diocese

Please Welcome The Rev. David Gable

Presider & Preacher

After teaching European history to college students for a decade, the Rev. David L. Gable enrolled at Virginia Theological Seminary, where he was ordained a priest in 1981. Over the years, he has served as rector, interim rector, and, most recently, as a supply priest in New Jersey and Long Island, before moving to Connecticut three years ago. In addition to his devotion to theology, liturgy, and Scripture, Father Gable has long been engaged in the study and performance of music—a passion he both cherishes and encourages in others.

Family has always been central to his life. He delights in a “pride” of children, each of whom he prays will continue to grow into strong and healthy people in this complex and challenging world. Father Gable treasures the love and support of his stepdaughter, who, despite facing her own significant health challenges, faithfully cares for him following his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and their young son.

Morning Prayer Summer Series

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Alan Rice and Kate Byroade for their faithful ministry as Officiants of Morning Prayer during the summer. With the exception of one service, each gathering was held in our beautiful Memorial Garden, providing a peaceful and prayerful setting that enriched our worship and fellowship together. If you attended any of these services, we invite you to share your thoughts by completing this brief three-question survey https://trinityhartford.org/morningprayer Your feedback will help us continue to nurture this meaningful ministry.

ADULT CHRISTIAN FORMATION

UPCOMING FORUMS

The Adult Christian Formation team is excited about our new program year! We are planning to offer a variety of presentations, open forums, and informative and entertaining opportunities for fellowship, fun, and spiritual growth. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us as we begin the year with these forums:

BOOKS FOR ALL

Censorship and Intellectual Freedom

Did you know that Kate Byroade, besides being a gifted preacher and worship leader, is the Director of Cragin Library in Colchester? Like most librarians, she has a passion for making books and access to knowledge available to everyone. On Sunday, Kate will present a brief history of censorship in the United States, discuss recent efforts to remove books from school and public libraries across the country, and talk about how the freedom to read supports a spiritual life. Please join us in the Library after the service for this thoughtful forum!

ANNUAL TRINITY STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…”

Hebrews 6:19

On October 12, Trinity will launch its annual appeal for pledges of financial support for next year’s operating budget. This is our opportunity to offer a portion of our personal wealth to ensure the future of our beloved parish. The theme for this year’s campaign is our search for stability in stormy times, and the ways in which Trinity serves as a strong anchor in our personal lives and in the life of our Hartford community.

Over the coming weeks, parishioners will talk about their experiences at Trinity and their gratitude for the role our parish has played, and continues to play, in their lives. Pledge packets will be mailed the third week of October, and will include instructions for making pledges via a traditional pledge card or online. The Ingathering will take place on Sunday, November 9.

Trinity supports us all; it’s our turn to pledge our support for Trinity.  We need every single one of us to make a pledge this year and help anchor the future of our parish!

BIBLE STUDY

Our Bible Study series, led by Rev. George Chien, will resume on October 19. The study will focus on the scripture lessons for the day, and will be an informal discussion.

These conversations provide an opportunity to delve a little more deeply into God’s word, and perhaps to consider the perspectives of others on what these passages mean to them.

Please plan to join us!

Book Group Meeting

The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon will be the featured novel of Trinity's next Book Group meeting. It's a gripping whodunit, a love story, and an exploration of the mysteries of exile and redemption - and is widely available at libraries and bookstores.

Jon Reik will host the meeting at his Farmington home on Friday, November 21st, from 7:00-8:30ish. Please let him know if you plan to attend, and he'll send you directions. (text or call Jon at 860-463-1267)

Everyone is invited to attend and will be most welcome!

GODLY PLAY

Godly Play is a comprehensive approach to Christian Formation that consists of

eight lessons. Together the lessons form a spiral curriculum that enables children to move into adolescence with an inner working knowledge of the classical Christian language system intended to sustain them all of their lives.

We welcome children 3 years through late childhood into our Godly Play sacred space each Sunday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:40 a.m.

If you have any questions or concerns, I am available to meet with you in person, or via text at 860-503 3353.

The Choir School of Hartford:

A season to celebrate!

The Choir School proudly launches its 20th Anniversary season—a celebration of music, growth, and community. With six new choristers joining us, the 2025–2026 season promises fresh energy and rich opportunities for musical and cultural enrichment.

We invite you to be part of this joyful milestone as you experience the meaningful contribution of these young people to our worship at Trinity Church.

Thank you for your support of the Choir School.

If you would like to make a direct contribution, please visit our website at choirschoolofhartford.org and navigate to the “Donate” tab. Your gift helps sustain the Choir School’s mission and supports the training and education of our young choristers. Your gifts are tax deductible as the Choir School of Hartford is a 501 C(3) organization.

PRAYERS IN THE CHAPEL

Every Sunday after our service we invite you to the chapel to pray for those guiding us through the search for a new rector. We are a small prayer team that has volunteered for this exercise. We also have found that this is a prayer time for our own needs and those of others. Please join us for this short time together, about 10-15 minutes. All are welcome!

A NOTICE FROM THE PRAYER TEAM

At Trinity Church we believe in the power of prayer.

  • Your written prayer requests are welcome. There are prayer jars on tables at both entrances in which you are invited to place prayer requests. You may also call or email the church office to make a prayer request. During the week, written requests will be collected and prayed over privately. At your discretion, such requests can be placed in the Sunday service leaflet. Prayer requests will be published for four weeks, then deleted unless you choose to renew them by contacting the Parish Administrator.
  • Intercessors are stationed in the south (lectern side) aisle of the Nave during communion each Sunday. Please approach them if you desire a moment of personal prayer. All personal prayers will remain confidential.

JOIN THE CHOIR! YOU'RE INVITED!!

Bach Had 20 Children. And Still Had Time for Choir.

Johann Sebastian Bach had 20 children. Yes, you read that right. Twenty.

(Seven with his first wife Maria Barbara, thirteen with his second wife Anna Magdalena.) Not all of them survived, but several grew up to be composers, performers, and church musicians themselves. In the Bach household, music wasn’t just a job, it was the family language. The dinner table probably had more singing than chewing. And still, Bach showed up for choir.

Every Sunday. Every feast day. Every rehearsal that probably occasionally went a little long.

As Cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, he was responsible for the music at four churches not just composing it, but teaching it, rehearsing it, and conducting it. He trained the choirboys, wrote the music, and then directed it all from the organ bench, often with a toddler or two underfoot.

Why?

Because he believed music was for the glory of God, and for the building of community. He knew the power of many voices becoming one. Of imperfect people singing together anyway. His choirs weren’t filled with professionals. Many were students. Some were just regular folks. But together, they made something beautiful, something sacred.

 Thursdays @ 7PM - Choir Room

All voices welcome.

No solos, no pressure, just joy.
