“Junonia Joy” is a vibrant 30x40 acrylic painting valued at $18,000—an extraordinary piece inspired by the beauty of our island.
Myra shares in her own words what inspired her to create this remarkable masterpiece:
In 2004 my beautiful Island home was hit by a tornado during hurricane Charlie. Ironically, my neighbors on both sides had barely a torn screen. However, the neighbor across Rabbit Road and my home were both just about demolished. In between crying to my insurance adjuster, finding extra large buckets to capture water from the large hole in our roof, pulling out soggy drywall and carpet I had to find a stress reliever. My shoreline treasure hunt became my daily therapy. Backpack, shovel, and sun hat, off I went on a treasure hunt to find the elusive Junonia. With its creamy white base and perfectly curved brown spotted pattern it truly was the holy grail on Sanibel. Day after day I returned home with countless lightening Whelks, Coquinas, Olives, and paper figs. As an artist, I was determined to find the perfect model for my Junonia series.
But each day the ocean artistry was alluding me. I returned home to the destruction of every part of my home and the hellish ongoing calls begging for help. I decided to not give up on doing my daily Sanibel stoop walk... as the islanders dubbed the constant posture seen all along the beaches. Perseverance and generosity of the sea paid off! Peeking out from a pile of seaweed on Bowman's Beach was a large shiny Junonia. I actually did jump for joy! That single Junonia became the subject and inspiration for at least ten different paintings. My most recent and favorite being "Junonia Joy." ~Myra Roberts
