Capping off a Career: Chemistry Professor Bringing Dream of Data Analysis in VR to Life

If you called John Kalivas a clairvoyant in 2000, you wouldn’t have been wrong.

The Idaho State University professor emeritus’ visions of days yet to come weren’t of the world-changing event variety in the vein of Nostradamus; they were hyper-focused on chemometrics.

Kinta Serve, associate professor in the biological sciences department, and her students recently spent a couple of days in Libby, Montana.

While in Libby, they participated in the Science Expo and Youth Rally, sponsored by The Center for Asbestos Related Disease, where they shared science activities with kids, including making "chemistry worms" with sodium alginate and using Hot Wheels cars to demonstrate centrifugal force. After the open-house-style event, Serve was one of more than a dozen doctors and scientists who gave presentations focusing on the ongoing efforts to research and treat asbestos-related diseases.
