Randa Kress Jason Reed and Dereck Eckman presenting at a PIE workshop

Mathematics and Statistics faculty members Randa Kress, Derek Eckman, Patrick Rault, and Jason Reed recently presented some of their early data and insights into implementing standards-based grading at a recent Program for Instructional Effectiveness workshop.

Instructors using standards-based grading grade a student on how well the student masters specific topics in a course. Starting in the Fall of 2023, the department has been testing the alternative grading approach in some of their Math 1143 courses, and their preliminary data is showing that pass rates are similar when compared to traditional grading methods. Looking ahead, the faculty plan to make some adjustments and gather more data on how standards-based grading impacts student outcomes throughout their college career.

If you may be interested in utilizing standards-based grading in one of your courses, you can view their presentation slides at this link.
