Honors Student Returns from 10-Week Public Health Scholars Program at Columbia University
Idaho State University honors student Elijah Escobedo spent his summer inquiring about the lives of New Yorkers.
Escobedo, now a junior majoring in biology with a concentration in biomedical sciences from Twin Falls, wasn’t hawking some product or service; he was knocking on their door, wanting to hear what they had to say specifically about the public health topics affecting them.

ISU doctoral students Arifa Islam Champa and Md Fazle Rabbi were guest speakers at the BSides Idaho Falls cybersecurity conference, where they each presented their research during the lightning talk session.
Champa’s study, "Phish Eye View: Can You Spot the Scam?," categorized phishing emails into five psychology-based types and evaluated the influence of email categories, visual cues, and explanatory feedback on the recipient’s ability to detect scams.
Meanwhile, Rabbi’s research, "SBOM Tools: Are They as Reliable as They Claim?," evaluated the reliability of seven software bill of materials generation tools on 50 popular Rust projects by comparing their detection of components, versions, and dependencies against ground truth.
Both students are working under the guidance of Minhaz Zibran, professor of computer science, with the Software Engineering and Cybersecurity Research Team.

Chad Pope awarded funds to support the NRC MOV Workshop
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Motor-Operated Valves workshop provides NRC resident inspectors with hands-on training related to the operation and performance of motor-operated valves. The instructors, both retired from INL, are some of the most experienced individuals in the country on this topic. The testing equipment used is one-of-a-kind, developed at INL by Kevin DeWall, one of the two course instructors.
"Your course has provided subject matter expert instruction to a great many NRC employees. Virtually all the feedback I have reviewed from previous classes has been significantly in the affirmative," said Tom Sullivan. "Thanks very much for providing high-caliber instruction to my NRC colleagues, and I look forward to a continuing productive relationship between the NRC and your university."
Chad Pope, professor and chair of the nuclear engineering department, serves as the course coordinator. The recent 5-year contract follows a 5-year contract from 2020 to 2025, where Pope served as the coordinator. Jay Kunze, nuclear engineering emeritus professor, served as the course coordinator from 2010 to 2020.

Internal Idaho NSF EPSCoR Seed Funding Opportunity
This Seed Funding program is part of Idaho’s multi-year (2023-2028) statewide National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Track-1 Research Infrastructure Improvement award, “Idaho Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water (E-W) Systems (I-CREWS).”
I-CREWS Seed projects must address topics at the intersections of Energy-Water systems. Here, the term Energy-Water (E-W) systems refers to the intersection between the systems, consisting of the physical infrastructure, data/information/knowledge, the people, laws and policy, as well as the fuel and water that flows or is in reserve. This may include, for example, interdependent power and water systems tied to the physical infrastructure for generation, transmission, distribution, and use of power and water, along with governance and management practices, knowledge flows, and effects on end users.
Proposals are due January 8.
