What's Happening in CoSE

Congrats, Daniel LaBrier!

Daniel, an associate professor of nuclear engineering, was named this month's Impactful Teaching honoree.

In his courses, Daniel makes "learning nuclear engineering more approachable by providing an environment closer to a conversation than a lecture. His method of relating abstract concepts to everyday situations and avoiding unnecessary academic language helps his students grasp key fundamentals and sets them up for success."

The Impactful Teaching and Research initiative seeks to "recognize impactful research, teaching and creative scholarship across Idaho State University campuses, two faculty who have made meaningful contributions in these key focus areas are being honored each month during the academic year."

Way to go, Minhaz Zibran!

Recently, Minhaz, a professor of computer science, was honored at the US Research Software Engineer Association conference in Philadelphia for earning a Better Scientific Software Fellowship – Honorable Mention. The fellowship program, sponsored by the US Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, seeks to “foster and promote practices, processes, and tools to improve developer productivity and software sustainability of scientific codes.” While he was at the conference, he also gave a lightning talk on his work with the Software Engineering and Cybersecurity Research Team at ISU.

More than 1,800 kids of all ages were able to make a trip to the Haunted Science Laboratory this year!

For over a decade, Idaho State’s Department of Physics and the Kiwanis Club of Pocatello have hosted the Haunted Science Laboratory, featuring educational and interactive science activities designed to delight, fright, and educate. Some exhibits use the same principles as Disneyland’s Haunted Science Mansion, except they are explained.

Internal Idaho NSF EPSCoR Seed Funding Opportunity

This Seed Funding program is part of Idaho’s multi-year (2023-2028) statewide National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Track-1 Research Infrastructure Improvement award, “Idaho Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water (E-W) Systems (I-CREWS).”

I-CREWS Seed projects must address topics at the intersections of Energy-Water systems. Here, the term Energy-Water (E-W) systems refers to the intersection between the systems, consisting of the physical infrastructure, data/information/knowledge, the people, laws and policy, as well as the fuel and water that flows or is in reserve. This may include, for example, interdependent power and water systems tied to the physical infrastructure for generation, transmission, distribution, and use of power and water, along with governance and management practices, knowledge flows, and effects on end users.

Proposals are due January 8.

Nominations Open for Distinguished Faculty

Celebrate the exceptional work of Idaho State University faculty by submitting nominations for the 2026 Distinguished Faculty Awards.
