Idaho State University Now Offering Associate Degree in Science
A brand new degree is debuting this fall at Idaho State University.
The start of the 2025-26 academic year marks the beginning of ISU offering an associate degree in science. The 60-credit degree allows students to choose from a variety of courses across ISU’s College of Science and Engineering to earn a degree tailored to their interests.

ISU and INL Officials Dedicate the Critical Materials and Energy Systems Innovation Center
An evolving partnership between Idaho State University and the Idaho National Laboratory is helping secure the nation’s supply of critical materials used to make a wide range of important technologies, including nuclear fuels.
INL and Department of Energy officials, joined by ISU President Robert Wagner, dedicated the Critical Materials and Energy Systems Innovation Center during an August 26 ceremony in Idaho Falls.

ISU Mourns the Loss of Faculty Member Curt Anderson
Dr. Curt Anderson, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, passed away August 19. While at ISU, Anderson studied neurophysiology and evolutionary neurobiology, and had more than 20 publications in biological sciences. His most recent book, Comparative Animal Physiology, is in the process of publication. Anderson had a deep passion for teaching and was loved by his students. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Colden Baxter to Present as Part of 2025 Water Resources Seminar Series Sept. 2
In a joint presentation drawing on examples from their experiences, Scott Carlson, staff scientist with the Clark Fork Coalition, and Colden Baxter, professor in the biological sciences department, will discuss the tension between scientific rigor and restoration project efficiency and suggest simple ways to evaluate the strength of restoration project planning and monitoring to inform prioritization and minimize the chance of mis-interpreting project outcomes.

Professor of Nuclear Engineering, Associate Dean, and past president of the American Nuclear Society, Mary Lou Dunzik-Gougar, was one of the five instructors who led the Nuclear 101 course at the ANS Annual Conference.
The course “seeks to give professionals who are in or adjacent to the industry an in-depth understanding of the essentials of nuclear energy and engineering from some of the field’s leading experts.”

Proposals Sought for Idaho Higher Education Research Council Undergraduate Research Funding Opportunity
The State Board of Education awarded ISU funds to support STEM undergraduate research projects during the 2025-2026 academic year. ISU will use these funds to support undergraduates in mentored research across STEM disciplines, with awards made to faculty Principal Investigators. Proposals should identify the student(s) to be supported and may support up to two students.

Presidential Pop-Up Planned for Oct. 6 in LEL 111
President Wagner is excited to continue his Bold Path Forward initiative this academic year by hosting a series of Presidential Pop-Ups around campus.
Faculty and staff from the College of Science and Engineering are invited to attend this casual gathering on October 6 at 3 PM in Lillibridge Engineering Laboratory 111. Refreshments will be provided by the President's Office.

Proposals for 2026-27 Catalog Changes Sought
The Undergraduate Curriculum Council is currently accepting proposals for catalog changes for the 2026-27 academic year. All proposals are due by October 20. Those requiring State Board of Education approval must be submitted by September 5, 2025.

Only complete proposals, with all impact responses entered and concerns resolved, will be accepted and processed for UCC's consideration.

The College of Science and Engineering Dean's Excellence Fund is intended to support students in their journey through ISU. The Dean's Office is particularly interested in providing financial assistance to students who might not be able to enroll in or complete the semester because of short-term financial hardships. Students seeking such support should be in good academic standing.

| | | | A Message from President Wagner Concerning the Governor's Budget Holdback Announcement | Idaho State University entered FY2026 with a balanced budget, and each year brings new opportunities and challenges. On August 15, the Office of the Governor announced an executive order requiring a 3% budget holdback for FY2026, which equates to $3.1 million of appropriated expenditure reductions.
