What's Happening in CoSE

A photo of Jeff Meldrum

We are mourning the loss of Professor Jeff Meldrum.

Meldrum joined the faculty of Idaho State University in 1993 and was the longest-serving member of the Department of Biological Sciences.

Over the course of his career, he taught across the curriculum from evolution to gross anatomy. He also taught across the university, including classes in anthropology, for radiographic science, and for the PT/OT programs.

"He was a colleague and friend to many," said Janet Loxterman, professor and chair of the biological sciences department. "Jeff was a skilled anatomist and passionate about understanding human evolution. Most recently, Jeff was charged with developing and teaching in our introductory anatomy and physiology series, serving nearly 500 students each year."

Serious Gaming: Researchers Developing Virtual Reality Game to Study Classical Literature

How students learn about the classics by Shakespeare, Dickens, and Austen may soon be from the inside of a virtual reality headset, thanks to the work of two Idaho State University researchers and their students.

Way to go, Christian Done, Sarah Faulk, Caleb Gee, Tek Jones, and Jonathan Garritson (not pictured) on receiving a scholarship from the Department of Energy's University Nuclear Leadership Program!

Combined, they earned $45,000 in scholarships to go towards "pursuing a nuclear-energy-related degree" or "receiving training as nuclear-energy-related technicians." Over the last three years, ISU students have received over $100,000 in scholarships through the program.

Opportunities for Students to Present Their Research

The 2025-2026 academic year is here, and it’s time to start thinking about opportunities for students to present their research throughout the year.

The Idaho State University Graduate School’s 9th annual Three-Minute Thesis Competition will take place on Thursday, November 13. This event challenges graduate students of any discipline to present their research to a general audience in under three minutes for a chance to win up to $2,000 and represent ISU at the state-level 3MT Competition.

Students of all degree levels and colleges can also participate in the 2026 Research Symposium on Wednesday, March 18. This is a university-wide conference-style event with three different presentation categories: poster, oral, and creative works.

Applications Sought for ASSERT Faculty Fellowship

Born out of an NSF EPSCOR grant entitled Idaho Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water Systems (I-CREWS), ASSERT – Aligning Stakeholders and Structures to Enable Research Transformation will explore how to pursue transformative research ideas from initial question to implementation.

Participants will meet weekly during the Spring 2026 semester. These sessions will include facilitated discussions, guest speakers, skill-building workshops, and collaborative feedback. Outside of these sessions, participants will be expected to complete readings, engage in reflective practice, and work on individual projects.

Faculty participation in ASSERT is equivalent to other forms of scholarship, including but not limited to an external proposal, peer-reviewed publication, invited oral or poster presentation, or a patent. As such, participation will be included in the annual evaluation of any and all participants, including a letter of support outlining the contributions from all involved. Faculty support is available (i.e., course release) for ASSERT participants.

Applications for the ASSERT program are due September 26.

NSF, NIH to Require Research Security Training

Research Security is crucial for protecting the integrity, value, and safety of scientific research. Protecting scientific research prevents intellectual property theft and threats to national security. Federal research sponsors now require principal investigators and Co-PIs to complete Research Security Training prior to submitting a research proposal.

The training requirement is already in effect for proposal submissions to the DOE, DOD, and USDA. The NSF and NIH will implement the Research Security Training requirement in October.

Proposals Sought for Idaho Higher Education Research Council Undergraduate Research Funding Opportunity

The State Board of Education awarded ISU funds to support STEM undergraduate research projects during the 2025-2026 academic year. ISU will use these funds to support undergraduates in mentored research across STEM disciplines, with awards made to faculty Principal Investigators. Proposals should identify the student(s) to be supported and may support up to two students.

Dean's Excellence Fund Accepting Requests from Students

The College of Science and Engineering Dean's Excellence Fund is intended to support students in their journey through ISU. The Dean's Office is particularly interested in providing financial assistance to students who might not be able to enroll in or complete the semester because of short-term financial hardships. Students seeking such support should be in good academic standing.

If you know of a student who is in need of short-term support, please have them complete this form.

From Around ISU

Angie Dangerfield Selected as Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer

Following a nationwide search, Angie Dangerfield has been selected as Idaho State University's next Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. Angie will begin her new role on September 15.

Dangerfield brings nearly 20 years of experience in higher education, including valuable experience at the University of Utah, Montana State University, and at Idaho State University, into this role.

Delta Business SkyMiles Benefits Graduate Students

Idaho State University has joined the free Delta SkyMiles loyalty program. Points generated in this program will help fund the overall graduate student travel budget at ISU.

As part of the travel grant rewards program with the Graduate School, students may receive Delta credits generated from the Delta SkyMiles loyalty program. The credits help graduate students travel to conferences to present their research and network with professionals in their field of study.

Consider Donating to the Shared Leave Program

The ISU Human Resources and Payroll Offices are inviting faculty and staff to consider donating accrued leave to the Shared Leave Program.

This program allows employees to transfer accrued leave to any eligible state employee for their use as paid sick leave when the employee has exhausted their leave balance and has a need for additional leave hours, in accordance with the State of Idaho’s Donated Leave Policy.
