ISU's delegation to the Interplanetary Life event pose for a selfie

ISU recently went interplanetary! Sort of.

Graduate students Tess Johnson, Brent Bowler, and Rhys Ellis, and undergraduate Emily Ford, along with Shannon Kobs Nawotniak, professor of geosciences, presented their research at the Interplanetary Life event in Boise. Their topics included satellite evaluation of planetary analogs, use of handheld spectrometers to detect the effects of magma encountering water or ice during an eruption, predicting space weather, extremophile microbial communities on the ocean floor that could hold clues to past life on Mars or ocean worlds, and the use of high-fidelity mission simulations to prepare for the return of humans to the Moon during the upcoming Artemis 3 mission.

Hosted by Spacepoint, the event brought together “explorers, engineers, and scientists who are transforming interplanetary science fiction into reality”. It featured a panel discussion with former NASA astronauts Steve Swanson and Garrett Reisman.

Rupert Elementary Seeking Booth Hosts for 9th Annual Science Night

Rupert Elementary would like to invite you to be a part of our 9th annual Science Night on Thursday, February 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Rupert Elementary Science Night is a free, high-paced, and interactive event designed for families to get their hands on science, technology, engineering, and math. The event drew nearly 1,000 visitors in a 2-hour time slot last year.

Booths can be set up for participants to "make-and-take", or to interact with before moving on to the next booth. To reserve your spot, contact Stacy Shaw, science night coordinator, at 360-536-7507.

Introducing the Support Program for Advancing Research and Creativity

The Support Program for Advancing Research and Creativity provides monetary support for faculty to advance their research or creative activities at ISU. Full-time ISU faculty may request $1,000 to $8,000 for project-related expenses

The purpose of the SPARC is to support the advancement of creative activities and research at ISU. The Office for Research makes funding available for this program and supports all areas, types, and disciplines of research and creative activity by all full-time ISU faculty. Proposals are evaluated in a fair and transparent way by the ISU Research Council, which then makes funding recommendations to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. Funding for SPARC comes from Facilities and Administrative costs resulting from external grant and contract funding from across the university.

Internal Idaho NSF EPSCoR Seed Funding Opportunity

This Seed Funding program is part of Idaho’s multi-year (2023-2028) statewide National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Track-1 Research Infrastructure Improvement award, “Idaho Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water (E-W) Systems (I-CREWS).”

I-CREWS Seed projects must address topics at the intersections of Energy-Water systems. Here, the term Energy-Water (E-W) systems refers to the intersection between the systems, consisting of the physical infrastructure, data/information/knowledge, the people, laws and policy, as well as the fuel and water that flows or is in reserve. This may include, for example, interdependent power and water systems tied to the physical infrastructure for generation, transmission, distribution, and use of power and water, along with governance and management practices, knowledge flows, and effects on end users.

Proposals are due January 8.
