Leif Tapanila will be stepping into the role of Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Research. Leif has been at ISU since 2005 as a member of the Department of Geosciences. Since 2015, he has also been serving as the Director of the Idaho Museum of Natural History. He brings extensive leadership experience to this role, not only from the IMNH but also from serving as Chair of the Geosciences Department and, more recently, as Chair of the CoSE executive committee. Leif has a long record of outstanding grantsmanship and graduate student mentoring, serving as primary advisor to 16 MS and Ph.D. students in GIS and Geosciences. Leif’s role as Associate Dean will represent 50% of his time, as he will retain his 50% appointment as the IMNH director.
Minhaz Zibran will be stepping into the role of Associate Dean for Student Success. Minhaz has been at ISU since 2021 after serving five years as a faculty member at the University of New Orleans. He has served as the Graduate Program Director in the Department of Computer Science since 2023. He brings extensive teaching and research experience to this role and also a strong commitment to supporting the student experience. At ISU, he founded the Muslim Students Association, serves as advisor to the Bangladesh Student Association, and has received the CPI Supervisor of the Semester award. Minhaz will begin his role as Associate Dean with a 50% appointment while continuing to teach in Computer Science and advise numerous graduate students.

Bengals on the road!
This summer, Tess Oldroyd-Johnson, a geosciences doctoral student, was invited to present her research at the Draper Natural History Museum's lunchtime expedition series at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming.
Her talk focused on what happens when water and lava meet, and the almost-invisible clues this interaction provides about how volcanic landscapes on Earth and even on other planets form.

Traveling to the breathtakingly scenic, small city of Challis, Idaho, 11 Idaho State University students participated in the fourth annual Teaching in Rural Areas Immersion Learning (TRAIL) Experience.
Led by Teaching and Educational Studies faculty Amanda Eller and Suzanne Beasterfeld, TRAIL offers students the opportunity for a week-long excursion in a rural-remote school and community to learn more about rural education and the area.

On July 1, 1963, Idaho State College was renamed for a fifth and final time to Idaho State University. School was dismissed for a day of signing, and members of the student government and administrative staff traveled to Boise to witness Governor Smylie sign the bill.

Faculty Drop-in Hours with Dean Widmann
Dean Widmann invites faculty to a drop-in hour on the third Thursday of each month, from 1 to 2 p.m., in Room 121 of the Physical Science Complex. The next will be held on Thursday, August 20.
This optional opportunity gives faculty a chance to chat with the Dean about projects, ask questions, share successes, and provide input regarding the future of the College.

The College of Science and Engineering Dean's Excellence Fund is intended to support students in their journey through ISU. The Dean's Office is particularly interested in providing financial assistance to students who might not be able to enroll in or complete the semester because of short-term financial hardships. Students seeking such support should be in good academic standing.
