Volcano vs. Wind: ISU Geologists Reveal Interaction Between Natural Phenomena

Research by geologists at Idaho State University is yielding new insights into the interplay between two of nature’s strongest forces: volcanoes and wind.

Shannon Kobs Nawotniak professor and chair of the geosciences department at Idaho State University and master's student David Cavell talk about her research on volcanic plumes' interaction with wind

Volunteers Sought for ISU Physics' Haunted Science Laboratory

One of East Idaho’s most popular Halloween attractions returns next month, and they need your help.

Idaho State University’s Department of Physics and Kiwanis Club of Pocatello’s Haunted Science Laboratory will be back at the Bannock County Event Center in late October. Department staff is looking for volunteers to help set up and prepare for the hundreds of local students attending the event.

Making IMPACTS: ISU Receives $1.2 Million For STEM Teacher Scholarships

A first-of-its-kind project for Idaho State University is set to tackle the growing shortage of science and mathematics teachers in Idaho by providing full tuition and cost-of-living scholarships to 16 eligible students.

Idaho State University has secured a five-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program to launch the Idaho Making Progress Against Critical Teacher Shortages (IMPACTS) project.

Thank you to USGS hydrologic technicians Jase Clanton–an ISU alum–and Aliesha Bradford for spending some time with our Environmental Field Methods class!

The group took a trip out to the USGS’s stream gauge on the Portneuf River to learn about how the USGS measures stream flow, how their equipment works, and the range of hydrological jobs available here in east Idaho with the USGS.

Congrats to our latest Bengals for receiving their U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission reactor operator license for our on-campus AGN-201 reactor!

The students were part of the Initial Operator Training and Student Operation class, taught by Mackenzie Gorham, senior clinical instructor, and offered in partnership between the Department of Nuclear Engineering and the College of Technology’s ESTEC Nuclear Technology program. The course provides students with unique, hands-on training opportunities not available except at research and training reactors like the AGN-201.

To obtain their reactor operator license, students must take the NRC’s three-part, multi-day exam that includes demonstrating proper reactor operation, an oral board examination, and a written exam. Having the license provides students an advantage when they apply for jobs and can help them start at a higher salary when they enter the workforce.

Flu Shot Clinics Scheduled for Oct. 21 and 30

CoSE will host a pair of flu shot clinics in October. The first will be held Monday, October 21 from 9 a.m. to noon in Gale Life Sciences Room 229. Meanwhile, the second is planned for Wednesday, October 30 from noon to 3 p.m. in Physical Science Complex Room 121.

Participants must sign up to receive their shot at least two hours prior to the start of the clinic.

Dean's Excellence Fund Accepting Requests from Students

The College of Science and Engineering Dean's Excellence Fund is intended to support students in their journey through ISU. The Dean's Office is particularly interested in providing financial assistance to students who might not be able to enroll in or complete the semester because of short-term financial hardships. Students seeking such support should be in good academic standing.

If you know of a student who is in need of short-term support, please have them complete this form.

Free Swag is Still Available!

Stop by the Dean's Office, PSC 120, and pick up a 1/4 zip pullover jacket.

Idaho State University and Southern Utah University’s Collaborative Halftime Performance is a Success

At the homecoming game, the ISU Bengal Marching Band and SUU Thunderbird Marching Band joined forces to deliver an outstanding halftime show featuring over 175 performers. The event was the result of months of planning and collaboration between directors Thomas Kloss (ISU) and David Torres (SUU).

"It’s the first time another band has joined our football game since I’ve been here, and it was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with another group as we sometimes are able to do at away games." Kloss said. "David sent us the music and I wrote the drill (movements). It came together in about 30 minutes of rehearsal Saturday morning."
