Students and faculty involved in the INBRE program pose for a photo.

Happy Birthday, Charlie Blount!

Charlie, a professor emeritus in the geosciences department, recently celebrated his 99th birthday! To mark the occasion, the department gave him some agate bookends and framed the original Western Union telegram he sent to accept his position at ISU in 1974.

He may have retired decades ago, but he’s still a very active presence in the department. Lately, he’s been working on a geomorphology project in Colorado, a project on pre-Yellowstone volcanism in Idaho, and helping out in the front office.

A photo of Denise McReynolds

Denise McReynolds has joined ISU as the new University Business Officer for CoSE and the Office for Research.

Denise has a broad background in financial analysis, operational strategy, and cross-functional leadership across healthcare, technology, and high-growth business environments.

Most recently, as Director of Operations at LIV in Pocatello, she helped scale operations as part of a $40M private equity investment through data-driven executive support. Her 12 years at onsemi included senior business analysis, revenue forecasting, pricing strategy oversight on $244M+ in annual revenue, and enterprise reporting. A Pocatello local, Denise holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Her first day was June 8.

Kudos, Greg Johnson, on being named the June CPI of the Month by the Career Center

A biochemistry major, Greg has been serving as a teaching assistant in the Department of Biological Sciences. In Fall 2025, he was the sole TA for the Human Systemic Physiology Lab, and despite having limited prior experience and advanced coursework, Johnson independently mastered the complex Biopac Student Lab system, which measures muscle, cardiac, and pulmonary functions.

He later collaborated with Susan Marion, associate lecturer, and a Biopac representative to develop a custom program that analyzes multiple muscle activation areas simultaneously.

Graduate students Sagar Bhusal and Md Saiful Ashraf Munna, along with Tao Huang, an assistant professor in the civil and environmental engineering department, attended the 2026 EPSCoR Annual Summit in New Orleans.

At the event, Sagar presented a research poster on streamflow trend analysis and flood inundation modeling at Fort Hall Bottoms, and Saiful gave a flash talk on probabilistic flood mapping for Idaho.

A volunteer helps water rocket scientists build their water rocket.

Your help is needed to create the next generation of rocket scientists.

The Department of Physics is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s Water Rocket Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 27 and 28, at Tydeman Park, N. 8th Avenue and E. Young Street. Volunteers are needed to help with setup and takedown, and to assist budding rocketeers in building their rockets during the event. Setup will begin at 9 a.m. each day, with the Water Rocket Festival running from 10 a.m. to noon. Takedown will begin just after the event ends on both days.

If you are interested in volunteering, contact Steve Shropshire, professor of physics, at steveshropshire@isu.edu or (208) 282-2212.

Faculty Drop-in Hours with Dean Widmann

Dean Widmann invites faculty to a drop-in hour on the third Thursday of each month, from 1 to 2 p.m., in Room 121 of the Physical Science Complex. The next will be held on Thursday, June 18.

This optional opportunity gives faculty a chance to chat with the Dean about projects, ask questions, share successes, and provide input regarding the future of the College.

Dean's Excellence Fund Accepting Requests from Students

The College of Science and Engineering Dean's Excellence Fund is intended to support students in their journey through ISU. The Dean's Office is particularly interested in providing financial assistance to students who might not be able to enroll in or complete the semester because of short-term financial hardships. Students seeking such support should be in good academic standing.

If you know of a student who is in need of short-term support, please have them complete this form.
