Our on-campus reactor AGN-201 is literally in pieces.
Under the guidance of Mary Lou Dunzik-Gougar, professor of nuclear engineering, students and staff are in the process of disassembling the reactor to take precise measurements of all its components. After the reactor is reassembled, power measurements will be taken and a benchmark report will be submitted to the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project, and, if accepted, published in the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments. It’ll be used by advanced reactor designers to test computer models of their designs by seeing if they can reproduce the results from the AGN-201 at ISU.

Chad Pope, professor and chair of the nuclear engineering department, was one of the panelists at the Celebration Week Faculty Panel.
Moderated by President Wagner, the event highlighted how meaningful connections between the University, industry, and community are driving innovation, expanding access, and creating lasting impact.

The votes have been tallied, and congrats to Avery Benson for winning the engineering office’s Back-to-School Photo Challenge with her shot of Norbert the bearded dragon showing off his Bengal pride!
Organized by Chan Blackett, administrative assistant 2, the contest asked students to capture what campus life looks like to them, then fellow students voted on their favorite.

Opportunities for Students to Present Their Research
The 2025-2026 academic year is here, and it’s time to start thinking about opportunities for students to present their research throughout the year. The Idaho State University Graduate School’s 9th annual Three-Minute Thesis Competition will take place on Thursday, November 13. This event challenges graduate students of any discipline to present their research to a general audience in under three minutes for a chance to win up to $2,000 and represent ISU at the state-level 3MT Competition.
Students of all degree levels and colleges can also participate in the 2026 Research Symposium on Wednesday, March 18. This is a university-wide conference-style event with three different presentation categories: poster, oral, and creative works.

LAST CALL: Applications Sought for ASSERT Faculty Fellowship
Born out of an NSF EPSCOR grant entitled Idaho Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water Systems (I-CREWS), ASSERT – Aligning Stakeholders and Structures to Enable Research Transformation will explore how to pursue transformative research ideas from initial question to implementation.
Participants will meet weekly during the Spring 2026 semester. These sessions will include facilitated discussions, guest speakers, skill-building workshops, and collaborative feedback. Outside of these sessions, participants will be expected to complete readings, engage in reflective practice, and work on individual projects.
Faculty participation in ASSERT is equivalent to other forms of scholarship, including but not limited to an external proposal, peer-reviewed publication, invited oral or poster presentation, or a patent. As such, participation will be included in the annual evaluation of any and all participants, including a letter of support outlining the contributions from all involved. Faculty support is available (i.e., course release) for ASSERT participants.
Applications for the ASSERT program are due September 26.

Proposals Sought for Idaho Higher Education Research Council Undergraduate Research Funding Opportunity
The State Board of Education awarded ISU funds to support STEM undergraduate research projects during the 2025-2026 academic year. ISU will use these funds to support undergraduates in mentored research across STEM disciplines, with awards made to faculty Principal Investigators. Proposals should identify the student(s) to be supported and may support up to two students.

The College of Science and Engineering Dean's Excellence Fund is intended to support students in their journey through ISU. The Dean's Office is particularly interested in providing financial assistance to students who might not be able to enroll in or complete the semester because of short-term financial hardships. Students seeking such support should be in good academic standing.
If you know of a student who is in need of short-term support, please have them complete this form.

At his annual address Wednesday, Idaho State University President Robert Wagner applauded the Idaho State community for its successes, and expressed confidence in the future.
“As a public institution, we are facing unrelenting scrutiny that is calling into question some of the very core ideals of higher education and even doubting our relevance - yet, despite the difficulties, we remain rooted in our institutional values of integrity, community, inclusivity, teamwork, shared responsibility, and learning.”
