Sweet Concrete: Researchers Develop Greener Building Materials Using Sugar Processing Waste Products
If you want to make more sustainable and environmentally friendly concrete, you’re going to need some sugar. Sort of.
A new study by researchers in Idaho State University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering shows swapping some of the cement found in concrete with precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) - a waste product created when sugar beets are processed into refined sugar - it’s possible to maintain the concrete’s strength similar to conventional concrete.

Recently, John Kalivas received the Outstanding Achievements in Chemometrics Award at the Eastern Analytical Symposium and Exposition held in Plainsboro, New Jersey.

Free Public Screening of Oppenheimer + Expert Q/A
The Departments of Nuclear Engineering, History, and Political Science, along with Phi Alpha Theta, will host a screening of Oppenheimer on Tuesday, December 5, at 5 p.m. at the Bengal Theater.
After the movie, there will be free pizza and a faculty Q&A session on the intersection of science and politics with Colin Johnson (Political Science), Chad Pope (Nuclear Engineering), and Sarah Robey (History).
Quick notes: Oppenheimer is rated R and is about three hours long. Concessions will be open and available for purchase during the film.

Professional Achievement Award Nominations Open Through Dec. 15
Idaho State University’s annual Professional Achievement Awards recognize some of the most influential alumni for their valuable and distinguished contributions to Idaho State, their profession and their community.
Nominations for the Professional Achievement Awards are due by December 15. You can nominate a deserving Bengal alumna or alumnus today by completing this form.

NSF-funded Advancing Research Impact in Society Center Seeks Broader Impacts Superstars
Do you know someone magnifying research impact through engagement, outreach, diversity, extension, proposal development, community affairs, science communications, or foundation work? The NSF-funded Advancing Research Impact in Society Center would love to get your recommendations for deserving candidates who are doing or who have done exemplary work in research, STEM, and higher education!
Nominations are due Monday, December 4. Winners will be recognized at the 2024 ARIS Summit in Omaha, Neb. Their work will be highlighted, and their travel costs will be covered by ARIS.

SciLine, based at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Offers Media Training for Scientists
This free, one-hour course—designed specifically for media-curious scientists with little or no media experience—teaches the basics scientists need to know as they consider dipping their toes or diving deeper into media engagement.
The course is led by Ph.D. neuroscientist Tori Espensen, with participation by freelance science journalist Elena Renken (NPR, Quanta Magazine, PBS “NOVA”). Attendees will learn what makes a science story newsworthy, how to become more “findable” by journalists, and key concepts and etiquette norms to know when speaking to a reporter.
The training will be held on Tuesday, December 5, at noon MST.

Presidential Candidate Finalists On-Campus Visits
Five finalists have been picked from a list of over 80 candidates who applied to become Idaho State University’s 14th president.
Open forums are planned for students, faculty, staff and the public to meet and hear from the finalists. There will also be an online portal available to provide feedback about the candidates.
The finalists were selected after 12 semifinalists were interviewed earlier this week by the Idaho State University President Search Committee.
