What's Happening in CoSE

Leif Tapanila, director of the Idaho Museum of Natural History, poses with Idaho No. 5, a Helicoprion fossil that was recently returned to the Idaho Museum of Natural History.

Fossil Found: Idaho No. 5 Returns to Idaho Museum of Natural History after 60+ Years

A late-night glance at his inbox almost caused Leif Tapanila to fall out of bed.

Looking at the screen of his phone, the director of the Idaho Museum of Natural History and professor of geosciences at Idaho State University scrolled through the words in an email from a colleague in Copenhagen, Denmark: "Some years ago in our collection, I came across a specimen of tooth whorl referred to Helicoprion ergasaminon by Bendix-Almgreen. It appears not to belong to our collection, so I hope you can help us find its correct home again."

Please RSVP by September 18 to [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you there!

Paul Link, professor emeritus in the Department of Geosciences, and Colden Baxter, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, will present at the Edson Fichter Nature Talks on September 21 and September 28, respectively.

The free lecture series, co-sponsored by the Friends of the Edson Fichter Nature Area and Idaho Fish and Game, will be held each Thursday in September at 6 p.m. at the outdoor amphitheater at Edson Fichter Nature Area, and attendees will “learn more about the wildlife, habitats, and landscape features found in the Portneuf River Valley.”

Idaho Museum of Natural History to Host Screening of "On Grizzly Ground"

The Idaho Museum of Natural History is hosting "On Grizzly Ground," a new wildlife film from Kris Millgate, the Emmy-nominated journalist who documented disappearing salmon across the Northwest.

“Following grizzlies is risky, but warranted,” says Kris Millgate, outdoor journalist and owner of Tight Line Media. “Greater Yellowstone bears are expanding their presence in the West so the odds of us being in their way as they make their way are going up. I want to show you how we help and hinder their recovery while also celebrating nature at its wildest.”

The film screening will be Sept. 14 at Frazier Hall from 6 to 9 p.m. This event is free and family-friendly. After the film, Millgate will host a question and answer period, followed by a reception hosted by the Idaho Museum of Natural History.

From Around ISU

Idaho State University Welcomes Largest Incoming Class Since 2014

This fall, Idaho State University welcomed its largest incoming class since 2014, with nearly 26 percent more first-time undergraduate students choosing ISU than in Fall 2022.

“These numbers mark a watershed at ISU. They represent the result of intentional strategies implemented over the last few years by the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff,” said President Kevin Satterlee. “But this report is much more than numbers. It’s about changing the lives of more students through education.”

School of Performing Arts to Present “Life x 3”

Idaho State University’s School of Performing Arts will present its first show of the season: “Life x 3” on Sept. 29, 30, and Oct. 5, 6, and 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre in the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center.

“Life x 3,” is a slice-of-life affair, tackling marriage, parenthood and professional aspirations. Actually, as the title suggests, it’s more like three views of the same slice-of-life," said Show Director Vanessa Ballam. "The events covered in this play are seen three times over, each instant replay viewed from a slightly different angle. It's a marvelous challenge for the actors and a fascinating display for the audience.”
