Paleontology Professor Featured on PBS' NOVA

An Idaho State University paleontologist has been featured on one of the nation’s premier science television shows.

Brandon Peecook, assistant curator of paleobiology at the Idaho Museum of Natural History and assistant professor in ISU’s Department of Biological Sciences, was one of the experts on a recent episode of PBS’ NOVA. Peecook shared his insight into the largest mass extinction event in Earth’s history, the Permian mass extinction, in an episode titled Ancient Earth: Inferno.

Office for Research Seeks Federal Funding Priority Input

Each year, Idaho State University prepares a list of research and program interests & priorities for Idaho’s federal Congressional delegation. The delegation uses the list to assist ISU in achieving its mission, “engage students through learning and research opportunities that improve the intellectual vigor, cultural vitality, and health of our communities.”

ISU faculty and staff are invited to suggest research and/or program interests & priorities for consideration. A research and program interests & priority input form requests a 3 - 5 sentence concept summary accompanied by information about current/past funding, current communication with federal funding agencies, etc. This form requires 10-15 minutes to complete.

Responses are due by November 17.

ISUPP 4090 Faculty Workload Policy Open for Comment

This policy represents the Technical Working Group's (TWG) policy draft with redlined additions from Faculty Senate feedback. Comments from the University community are requested following a Faculty Senate vote endorsing the posting of ISUPP 4090 Faculty Workload into 30-Day Review

Faculty workload is a complex issue, and insight from an additional group of diverse faculty perspectives will be of great value as we finalize this policy draft. The purpose of this comment period is to seek constructive, actionable language changes that would improve specific parts of the proposed policy revision.

Colonel Fergus “Paul” Briggs (USMC) and Major Gina M. Briggs (USAF) Establish New Endowment for Military-Affiliated Students and Veterans

Idaho State University alumnus and Pocatello native Paul Briggs and his wife, Gina, have established a new scholarship endowment to help ISU students serving, or who have served, in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Colonel Fergus “Paul” Briggs (USMC) and Major Gina M. Briggs (USAF) Scholarship Endowment will support ISU students affiliated either as a veteran, a member of the National Guard or Reserve, or any officer development program of any service component.

Campus Learning Management System Update

After a year of analysis, we have decided that Idaho State University will be transitioning to Canvas as the LMS for the institution. Results of the summer 2023 pilot show that Canvas is the preferred LMS of both a majority of our students and the first choice of our faculty who participated in the pilot. This decision is both a student-centric result of adopting the end-user-preferred choice and is also choosing a more modern, faculty-user-friendly system. Each of our public four-year sister institutions in Idaho already use Canvas and have reported very favorably on their choice of Canvas as their LMS.

Empowering Students and Non-Profits Through Grant Writing at ISU

Kellee Kirkpatrick, an associate professor in Political Science, has been making a significant impact on students and the community through her innovative grant writing class.

Kirkpatrick's connection with ISU spans ten years. Originally hailing from Kansas, Kirkpatrick found her home at ISU and has since been teaching American politics and public policy, contributing to the academic growth of countless students.

The grant writing class (POLS 4457/5557) is a unique course designed to equip students with the essential skills needed to excel in grant writing—an area where many individuals lack prior experience.

Presidential Search Update

The State Board of Education has added Dr. Karen Appleby as a new member of the search committee. Dr. Appleby brings a wealth of experience to the committee as a faculty member and academic leader on our campus.

The search committee is currently reviewing and vetting candidates for on-campus interviews that are scheduled to take place in December. Each candidate will have open forums in Pocatello, Meridian, and Idaho Falls as part of the interview process. Sessions in Pocatello will be live-streamed to the University’s YouTube page. Zoom will not be available for any open forum sessions.
