What's Happening in CoSE

Outstanding work, Jordan Peper!

Jordan, a mechanical engineering major, took home First Place in the Student Poster category at SciX 2023 in Sparks, NV.

Working in the lab of Chemistry Professor John Kalivas, their research is into developing virtual reality-based systems that will help people make quicker and more accurate data analysis decisions.

Last week, nuclear engineering students Abigayle Hargreaves, Eva Barker, Nelson Snow, and Mitchel Frasure presented their research at the American Nuclear Society's Winter Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C. The research is part of a General Electric-led and Department of Energy ARPA-E-funded project looking into ways to maximize the energy potential of nuclear fuel.

The group is studying ways to measure the amount of still usable material in spent nuclear fuel that can be recycled in advanced nuclear reactors. The project is being led by Chad Pope, Ph.D., P.E., professor and chair of the nuclear engineering department.

SciLine, based at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Offers Media Training for Scientists

This free, one-hour course—designed specifically for media-curious scientists with little or no media experience—teaches the basics scientists need to know as they consider dipping their toes or diving deeper into media engagement.

The course is led by Ph.D. neuroscientist Tori Espensen, with participation by freelance science journalist Elena Renken (NPR, Quanta Magazine, PBS “NOVA”). Attendees will learn what makes a science story newsworthy, how to become more “findable” by journalists, and key concepts and etiquette norms to know when speaking to a reporter.

The training will be held on Tuesday, December 5, at noon MST.

IMNH Offers Free Admission for National American Indian Heritage Month

In honor of National American Indian Heritage Month the Idaho Museum of Natural History will offer free museum admission to enrolled tribal members during the month of November.

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November as “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Free museum admission will be given to tribal members who present a valid tribal identification card.

2024 NASA EPSCoR Rapid Response Research Proposals Sought

This opportunity is intended to provide limited funding (~$100K) to researchers for projects that last a year or less and are specifically targeted to NASA’s needs. The technical part of the proposal is limited to 2-3 pages per topic. Idaho NASA EPSCoR must submit any proposals on behalf of Idaho researchers, and only a limited amount of proposals will be accepted from Idaho.
