Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics Team Awarded Collaborative Department of Energy Grant

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded the Idaho State University Department of Mathematics and Statistics team a research grant under the program "Scientific Machine Learning for Complex Systems."

The team, led by Professor Yury Gryazin, is part of a multi-university grant proposal, "Domain-Aware Advanced Gaussian Process Driven UQ for Complex Stochastic Systems." This collaborative project involves Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and Rice University.

Recently, Samjhana Rajbhandari, a civil engineering graduate student, was among 32 students selected to be on a team at the 2024 Project Precast competition. Over 48 hours, the student teams worked with industry mentors to design a Museum of Mountain Sports using precast concrete beams, slabs, wall panels, and more. Samjhana said the competition “was a valuable experience that broadened my understanding of the field. I am grateful to my mentors for sharing their expertise and insights on real projects and to Dr. Mustafa Mashal for encouraging me to participate in the competition.”

Project Precast was held at the 2024 PCI Convention in Denver. Also attending the convention from Idaho State were Bruce Savage, professor and chair of the civil and environmental engineering department; Mustafa Mashal, associate professor of civil engineering; Jared Cantrell, research engineer; Suraj Dahal, civil engineering graduate student; and John Liimakka, clinical instructor of civil engineering technology.

Research into 2020 Idaho Earthquake Highlighted in Idaho Statesman

In a story by the Idaho Statesman, Glenn Thackray, professor of geosciences, discusses some new findings that are "shaking up what we know about Idaho earthquakes and the faults that cause them."

INL Launches Experts Database

Researchers now have a new tool to connect with experts at Idaho National Laboratory.

INL is pleased to announce the launch of INL Experts, a public, searchable database designed to expand collaborations with INL researchers and enhance the visibility of their research. This tool can inspire discovery and innovation by connecting researchers within the laboratory, across disciplines, nationally and internationally.

Applications Sought for Institutional Biosafety Committee Chair

The position of chair of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is open for applications.

The term of the chair is for at least one year, and they may be reappointed. Although the IBC does not currently meet in the summer, the chair must be available for IBC-related business during the summer months. Compensation will be determined in consultation with the Office for Research and the individual's department chair and college dean, in an effort to meet the needs of the position and balance workload. The IBC Chair has the responsibility for overseeing the coordination and implementation of effective, efficient systems for biosafety protocol review by the IBC, in compliance with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) advisory document and the National Institutes for Health (NIH) Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules.

Proposals Sought for Office for Research's Faculty Seed Grant Program

The ISU Office for Research Faculty Seed Grant Program is intended to encourage new junior-level faculty and existing faculty who are refocusing their research programs to develop research, scholarly, or creative programs that provide the potential for extramural funding and long-term professional development. Successful proposals will provide data to support proposals for external funding. Proposals will be accepted from all eligible faculty across all colleges and departments. Proposals are due March 19.

If you have any questions concerning the guidelines or the proposal and review process, please contact Dave Harris and/or Steve Wright.

Advanced Manufacturing for Extreme Environments Workshop March 26 and 27

The Center for Advanced Energy Studies' Advanced Manufacturing for Extreme Environments Workshop aims to build a community of advanced manufacturing researchers to address grand challenges in advanced manufacturing for extreme environments.

The goal is to connect CAES researchers with industry and government researchers to enhance collaborations in advanced manufacturing (AM). Attendees will learn about AM research capabilities across CAES, government labs, and industry to identify subareas of AM for collaboration. Additionally, gaps in CAES infrastructure will be identified to prioritize major instrumentation procurement strategies.

The workshop will take place in Idaho Falls on March 26 and 27.

Google Storage Limit Changes and Action Steps for Faculty and Staff

Due to changes in Google's approach to digital data storage associated with education subscriptions, it has become necessary for ISU to implement updated data storage limits. Specifically, Google will no longer provide unlimited data storage as part of their education service agreements without universities incurring substantial costs. Meaning that our costs will continue to rise as our storage usage increases.

As a result, every Google account at ISU will be subject to new data limits for electronic storage space. This includes Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Drive, along with some Google Workspace applications. The new Google storage limits will vary depending on your role at ISU. Every account holder or manager will need to consider options for transferring or deleting files if they are over their data limit. Resources such as IT support, information forums, and ISU’s Google Storage Limits webpage are available to assist with this process.

Give Input on the Library's Future Plans

The University Library Committee wants your input regarding the Library's future plans.

We've provided two questions to help brainstorm:

  • What do you need from the Library?
  • In what ways could the Library grow?

Let us know your thoughts by writing on the white boards in the Library's lobby between March 4 and 15 or online via Google Jamboard.

Bold Path Forward Spring Listening Sessions

The Bold Path Forward is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to actively participate in shaping the trajectory of Idaho State University. It's a platform for us to come together, share our insights, and chart a course that reflects our values, aspirations, and ambitions.

Your voice matters. Through the Bold Path Forward, you have the chance to contribute directly to the decision-making process, ensuring that the needs and aspirations of our faculty, staff, and students are heard and acted upon. Together, we’ll chart a bold and inspiring path forward for Idaho State University.

Reminder: G01 Parking Lot Closure and Construction

The G01 parking lot at the Pond Student Union Building will be under construction starting on March 16. The main purpose of this construction project is to provide a safe place to park for those entering campus. The project is also designed to create a welcoming area for employees, students and visitors to ISU. Timely updates will be available in Idaho State Today and Roar Weekly to allow the primary users of this lot to plan accordingly and to minimize the impact on those visiting campus. Updates will also be sent out over Public Safety's social media platforms and on this website.

ISU Book Bundle: New Course Material Model Starting Fall 2024

Idaho State University is moving to a new course material model that will reduce the cost of materials for students and ensure they have all their materials across all courses prior to the first day of class, August 19.

Workshop: Thrive, Define Self-Worth and Cultivate Empowerment

In this empowering presentation, on March 12 from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring Rebecca A. Arthur, CHt and offered by the ISU Gender Resource Center, we will delve into essential tools to help you thrive by understanding yourself better and how to have healthier relationships.
