Idaho State Univ. Prof., Student Return from 9-Day Research Expedition on the Pacific Ocean
Ask Rhys Ellis if he’d spend another nine days at sea, and you’ll get an enthusiastic answer.
“Absolutely, I’d love to do it again,” says the senior majoring in honors microbiology at Idaho State University. “I had only seen the ocean once briefly before starting college, so spending over a week on the ocean doing cutting-edge research and collecting samples is an experience I never even dreamed about being able to do, especially going to school in a landlocked state like Idaho.”

The ISU GeoClub is holding their first-ever Mineral ID Fest!
Bring a rock, mineral, or fossil to the Physical Science Building Room 220 on Tuesday, November 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. to have it identified by geosciences students and faculty.

Local Community Members Support the Building of Dinosaurs from the Mountain
Gene and Beverly Gillette generously sponsored the tyrannosaurus mount in the Idaho Museum of Natural History’s newest exhibit, “Dinosaurs from the Mountain.”
Gene has loved history since he was a child. He would explore the Hagerman Fossil Beds with his father when he was young. He later came to Idaho State University where he majored in history. He got the opportunity to really enjoy his love of natural history as a park ranger for the summer at Craters of the Moon, right after marrying Beverly.

Office for Research Seeks Federal Funding Priority Input
Each year, Idaho State University prepares a list of research and program interests & priorities for Idaho’s federal Congressional delegation. The delegation uses the list to assist ISU in achieving its mission, “engage students through learning and research opportunities that improve the intellectual vigor, cultural vitality, and health of our communities.”
ISU faculty and staff are invited to suggest research and/or program interests & priorities for consideration. A research and program interests & priority input form requests a 3 - 5 sentence concept summary accompanied by information about current/past funding, current communication with federal funding agencies, etc. This form requires 10-15 minutes to complete.
Responses are due by November 17.

Free Donuts for Veterans, Military-Connected and Staff
ISU Staff Council is teaming up with the ISU Veteran Student Services Center (VSSC) to help honor, recognize and thank our Veterans and other military-connected individuals for their service. Please join us in celebrating our Veterans on Friday, Nov. 10, from 8-9:30 a.m. in the SUB lounge. Free donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate for veterans, military-connected people and the first 200 ISU staff members.
Staff Council in Idaho Falls will serve donuts on Thursday, Nov. 9, from 8-9:30 a.m., first come, first served.

Honor First-Generation Students and Graduates during First Generation Celebration Week
To commemorate First-Generation Celebration Week, we are currently seeking nominations to honor first-generation individuals and first-generation student supporters at Idaho State University.
This award aims to recognize the exceptional first-generation students, faculty, staff, and their supporters across all our campuses including Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Meridian, and Twin Falls. If you know of any individual who has made significant contributions to our community and embodies the spirit of first-generation success, we encourage you to nominate them.

Volunteers Needed for New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation is coming soon, and staff, faculty, student, and alumni volunteers are needed to help spring semester Bengals feel at home by offering a warm welcome to campus.
Volunteers are needed for December 15 and January 3 in-person sessions for the Pocatello campus. Volunteers can be greeters, moderators or meal hosts. If you can volunteer an hour or two on either December 15 or January 3, please fill out the New Student Orientation Volunteer form to RSVP. Two weeks ahead of your selected orientation date, we will communicate times and volunteer responsibilities for your specific role.

PIE Faculty Workshop: Evaluating Your Class Through the Lens of an International Student
All faculty are invited to a PIE Faculty Workshop that will be held on Thursday, Nov.9 from 3 -4:30 p.m.
In this workshop, Janna Graham (Assistant Vice Provost) will provide strategies for framing your syllabus and other assignments to enhance intercultural communication and support international students. This will be a hands-on workshop, so please feel free to bring in your syllabi and/or major assignments to review. This event will be delivered in person in the Library room #B06 and via Zoom.

Volunteers Needed for Winter Commencement
Idaho State’s Winter Commencement will be held Saturday, December 16, at 11 a.m., in Holt Arena. Because this is a large-scale event, we need volunteers to help make the day run smoothly for our graduates and their guests. Volunteer roles will include ushers, check-in staff, processional support, ceremony flow, and more.
If you would like to volunteer, please complete the Commencement Volunteer Sign Up form by Friday, November 17. Volunteers will receive instructions and will have the opportunity to attend a pre-commencement walkthrough the week of the ceremony.

Save the Date: 7th Annual Three-Minute Thesis
The Idaho State University Graduate School invites you to join us for the 7th annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition on Thursday, November 9. This year’s competition will be held at the L.E. & Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center in the Black Box Theatre.
Founded by the University of Queensland in 2008, the 3MT Competition is an academic competition that cultivates students’ presentation and science communication skills. The competition challenges them to describe their research within three minutes to a general audience.

You are always welcome to create a draft story, submit it via the Story Submission Form, or send it to Logan. The Office of Marketing and Communications and Logan will coordinate to get the story finalized and distributed to the media outlets/platforms that best tell the story.
