The 2024 edition of Bengal STEM Day is in the books!

 

An extra big thanks to our session hosts and volunteers from across Idaho State University and the community, as well as the PSUB staff, for helping make this year’s event a success!


5 Seats Available at CoSE's An Opportuni-Tea Table


CoSE is sponsoring a table at the 14th Annual An Opportuni-Tea fundraiser for the University Honors Program on Saturday, April 6, from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the ICCU Bengal Alumni Center.


Currently, we have 5 seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in attending, email Logan McDougall at [email protected] and include if you will be bringing a guest.


Funds raised at An Opportuni-Tea support student scholarships, research, additional UHP programming, seminars, and courses.

GrantForward Faculty Training on Wednesday, Feb 28 at Noon


The training session "Using GrantForward as a Grant Seeker/Researcher" presented by GrantForward to members at Idaho State University will share tips on best practices for using GrantForward across three use cases on finding grants, receiving recommendations, and learning strategic information. GrantForward is a search engine dedicated to helping institutions and individuals find grant opportunities. The training will be held via Zoom. The meeting ID is 841 8291 0538, and the passcode is 146851.

Proposals Sought for Office for Research's Faculty Seed Grant Program


The ISU Office for Research Faculty Seed Grant Program is intended to encourage new junior-level faculty and existing faculty who are refocusing their research programs to develop research, scholarly, or creative programs that provide the potential extramural funding and long-term professional development. Successful proposals will provide data to support proposals for external funding. Proposals will be accepted from all eligible faculty across all colleges and departments. Proposals are due March 19. ISU Utilizing New Chemical Inventory System


Idaho State University is now using CampusOptics for chemical inventory management. Existing inventories have been transferred to the new system.


To ensure that chemical inventories are current and accurate, the EHSS department is asking that all individuals responsible for chemical inventory management start working on inventory verifications in CampusOptics. Information on how to use CampusOptics is available on the EHSS website, and EHSS can provide training as needed.

Google Storage Limit Changes and Action Steps for Faculty and Staff


Due to changes in Google's approach to digital data storage associated with education subscriptions, it has become necessary for ISU to implement updated data storage limits. Specifically, Google will no longer provide unlimited data storage as part of their education service agreements without universities incurring substantial costs. Meaning that our costs will continue to rise as our storage usage increases.


As a result, every Google account at ISU will be subject to new data limits for electronic storage space. This includes Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Drive, along with some Google Workspace applications. The new Google storage limits will vary depending on your role at ISU. Every account holder or manager will need to consider options for transferring or deleting files if they are over their data limit. Resources such as IT support, information forums, and ISU’s Google Storage Limits webpage are available to assist with this process.  

Annual Dean Feedback Survey Open


Each year, the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs completes an annual evaluation of Deans. The feedback collected in this survey will provide information for consideration in these annual performance evaluations. This survey should take about ten minutes to complete. With the exception of the verbatim comments at the end of the survey that will be shared with the Deans, all information will remain confidential. Only aggregate data will be shared with the Dean being evaluated. This survey is completely anonymous AND will not track any identifying information. Feedback can be submitted until 5 p.m. on Friday, March 1.

Applications Sought for Idaho Science and Technology Fellowship


Candidates are being sought for this coming year's Idaho Science and Technology Policy Fellowship.


ISTPF is a nonpartisan program that places terminal degree-holders in the sciences, social sciences, and engineering in year-long funded fellowships in Idaho state government. ISU has partnered with BSU and UI for five years on this important initiative, and we would like to place a Bengal as a fellow this coming year. This program is a rare opportunity to strengthen the connection between policy and academic research, while giving researchers a unique opportunity for professional development. The 2024-2025 applications close on March 29. Dr. Sarah Robey is ISU's representative on the ISTPF leadership team. DOE Seeks Applicants for Graduate Student Research Program


The Department of Energy's Office of Science has announced that its Graduate Student Research program is accepting applications for the 2024 Solicitation 1.


The program supports supplemental awards for outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory or facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for three to 12 consecutive months. The goal is to prepare graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to DOE's mission.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 1.

CAES Accepting Applications for Collaboration Funds, Summer Visiting Faculty Programs


Applications are now being accepted for the Center for Advanced Energy Studies' Collaboration Funds and Summer Visiting Faculty programs. CAES Collaboration Funds provide funding to projects where INL researchers serve as the principal investigators in collaboration with faculty members from the CAES universities. Meanwhile, the CAES Visiting Faculty program provides funding to projects where the principal investigators are CAES university faculty.


Successful applicants in both programs will demonstrate how their proposal would enhance collaborative relationships among the CAES entities, with priority given to projects focusing on S&T strategic initiatives and/or CAES focus areas (advanced manufacturing, energy storage/transfer, and critical materials/geothermal).

From Around ISU

ISU Teaching and Learning Symposium Slated for March 28


The Idaho State University Program for Instructional Effectiveness, the ISU Cultural Events Committee, and the College of Education will be hosting the second annual ISU Teaching and Learning Symposium. Faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to attend and learn more about high-impact practices in teaching.


This year’s keynote speaker will be Associate Professor, Dr. Jevin West who is the co-founder of the new Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington, which is aimed at resisting strategic misinformation, promoting an informed society, and strengthening democratic discourse.

G01 Parking Lot Construction Information


Reconstruction of the G01 parking lot closest to the Pond Student Union at Idaho State University will begin March 16.


The main purpose of this construction project is to provide a safe place to park for those entering campus. The project is also designed to create a welcoming area for employees, students and visitors to ISU. Timely updates will be available in Idaho State Today and ROAR Weekly to allow the primary users of this lot to plan accordingly and to minimize the impact on those visiting campus.

ISU Flute Day Welcomes Flute Players of All Ages


The Idaho State University Flute Studio is hosting a Flute Day on March 30. Join flutists from the area for a day of flute and fun!


Flutists of all ages and abilities are welcome (Parents of younger flutists are invited to attend if supervision is needed).


Admission is free, but pre-register by March 27 for a chance to win a door prize.

Virginia Barnett Joins Career Center CPI Program Team


The ISU Career Center team is pleased to announce that Virginia Barnett has joined their staff as the new CPI Off-Campus Coordinator.


Virginia is an ISU alumna, with an MA in Communication focusing on Leadership and Student Affairs. She has worked on campus for over 15 years in various positions, including volunteer coordinator, administrative assistant, and academic advisor. 

Avalanche Clinic: State of the Snowpack February 29


All winter enthusiasts are welcome to join the Idaho State University Outdoor Adventure Center for a FREE avalanche awareness workshop featuring Fred Carus - Director of the Bridger - Teton Avalanche Center! Fred will be discussing this season’s snowpack, incident case studies, and more on February 29 at 7 p.m. in the Wood River Room in the Pond Student Union.

Heart and Grit: ISU Bengal Hockey Club Not Slowing Down After Difficult First Season


The ISU Bengal Hockey Club’s inaugural season was one to remember, but not for the reasons you might think. Establishing a collegiate club sport takes years of work and a team of volunteers, a luxury the Bengals didn’t have as they explored their options for building a hockey club from the ground up
