Body Politics
Opening Reception: January 7, 5-8 p.m.
Virtual Opening: January 8, 4-5 p.m. (via Zoom)

Beginning with the policing of women’s bodies, and expanding to examine all forms of body policing and discrimination, ARC will host a juried exhibition in January 2022 to address these themes. Body politics shape the socio-political climate and affect basic human rights, from the #metoo movement and rape culture, to domestic violence, to gender politics, and right down to the politics of hair in the classroom and workplace.

Patrice Nelson: Into the Vanishing Prairie
Opening Reception: January 7, 5-8 p.m.

This is a series of walnut ink works on top of watercolor, acrylic wash, of threatened and endangered flora and fauna. These are various sizes with the largest works on 22" x 30”on 300 lb watercolor paper. The images are "fading" and vanishing because these species are tragically fading from our natural world. After spending my childhood with my dad looking for rare species and then my dad making photographic accounts, these pieces of threatened and endangered species are very important to me.

Until There Is No Sun by Clare Benson
Opening Reception: January 7, 6-9 p.m.
On view through February 12

Filter Photo is pleased to present Until There Is No Sun, a solo exhibition of photography by Clare Benson. Benson spent nearly a year above the Arctic Circle working alongside space physicists, indigenous reindeer herders, and a neuroscientist who studies the eyes of Arctic reindeer. This continuing body of work explores relationships and contradictions—of light and seeing, of science and ancient myth, of that which we know and that which we continue to seek. Learn more here.

Opia, Rachel Niffenegger
January 8 through February 26

For her fourth solo exhibition with Western Exhibitions, Opia, Rachel Niffenegger braves familiar faces in curious and experimental new media. Specters the artist previously conjured through paint pours, are now generated through an obsessive digital breeding process, which combines artificial intelligence and sublimated aluminum. These wraiths are suspended amongst haunted furniture, pulled from the folds of psychedelic clay, and spiraled through mirrored metal work. A precarious steel and brass tête-à-tête chair and uncanny rug divides the gallery. The psychological seating presents a space to ponder our unbecoming, and observe the haunted underscores of ourselves and homes in the process.

Wayfaring, Aya Nakamura
January 8 through February 26

Western Exhibitions is thrilled to present 10 new abstract works on paper—colored pencil on artist-produced handmade paper—by Aya Nakamura in her first show, Wayfaring, at the gallery. The show opens on Saturday, January 8 and will run through February 26, 2022. Appointments are not necessary; masks are mandatory; gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 11am to 6pm. The drawings are colored pencil on handmade paper of different sizes and shapes, which have a physicality and assert themselves during the drawing process. Variegated lines move across, alongside and into fields of color, and these assemble into amorphous compositions that appear to simultaneously build and dissolve. Some have visual links to existing symbols and objects, which provide a starting point and focus. Their inspirations are various but orbit around a cataclysmic event, the passing of a loved one in the spring of 2021. They are meditations on death and metaphysics, and provide a space for questioning, grief, memorial, humor, and healing.
