Surabhi Ensemble with Guests Juan Dies and Lorena Iniguez of Sones de Mexico
June 2 at 7:30 p.m. at City Winery

During this most difficult past year, members of the Surabhi Ensemble and Sones de México Ensemble (Juan Díes and Lorena Iñiguez) came together to create new material which looked at the changes rapidly occurring during a time of social justice awareness and global pandemic protocols. This collaborative project titled “Respirando Libre" (Breathing Freely) has led to work with Chicago’s Night Out in the Parks program, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Tourism Department of Huajuapan de León in Oaxaca, Mexico. The combination of Indian, Arabic, flamenco, African and Mixteco music and dance will be highlighted in this special City Winery fundraising live performance to support the collective’s tour to Oaxaca, Mexico in July 2021. Tickets available here.
Western Exhibitions

Edie Fake "The Pieces"
June 5 through July 24

Western Exhibitions is thrilled to present our third solo show with Edie Fake. In Gallery 1, Fake will present several mid-size paintings on panel that take the shape of sandcastles, paintings that consider the sense of impermanence left in particular by the tumultuous year that was 2020. Inspired by a rollercoaster of emotional states, this body of work juxtaposes the idea of many small things coming together with the constant threat of being washed away to start over. The paintings are informed by looking at diatom art, desert sand, cellular and viral behavior, rising ocean levels, and as always with Edie Fake, the audacity of queer utopian imagining. A smaller group of mostly abstract panels that Fake has been calling “erogenous zones” will be sprinkled throughout the space and in Gallery 2, Fake will show a new series of collages.

Virginia Carstarphen: Wanderings, Maps and Memories
On view through June 19

Although the artist's work edges mostly on abstraction, she has always thought of herself as a landscape artist. Artists like Eva Hesse, Anselm Keifer, and Cy Twombly inspire her. Cartography and asemic writing are devices she relies on to explore her subject matter. Through line, color, material and gesture Virginia attempts to honor the landscapes that she is deeply attached to. These landscape explorations are filtered through both experience and memory. Imagination plays an important role as well.
