Sung Jang: Given
Opening Reception: Saturday November 6 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On View: November 6 through December 18

In his second solo exhibition at Volume Gallery, Chicago based designer Sung Jang presents symbiotic combinations of found stones buttressed by lattice bases. The deliberate combinations are analogous to humanity’s relationship with nature—rock and grid representing nature meeting human reasoning. With their light touch, the pieces reflect a traditional Korean dynamic with nature, one of appreciation and respect.

LATITUDE November Artist in Residence 2021 Sandra Oviedo/Colectivo Multipolar
Artist Presentation on November 19

Sandra Oviedo (a.k.a. ColectivoMultipolar) is a Chicago-based photographer who loves the dance floor, artists, and creative spaces. Inspired by a diverse collective of artists she is often surrounded by, she began using ColectivoMultipolar to honor that diversity. Born in Mexico, her first flight was to Chicago during her adolescence and she fell in love with the city and its community. “Documenting our Story” is how she defines her work and “an iconic eye in the queer art – night life scene in Chicago” is how the publication SIXTY Inches From Center described her photography. While studying communications, she discovered that photography was the ideal language to express what it means to be alive.

Jessica Gondek: Ironmades
On view through November 20

My work endeavors to blur the distinction between hand and machine. The title of the exhibition, Ironmades, is a nod to the early 20th Century Dada movement engaged with machinery and readymades. As an artist, I continue building on this tradition to bring it into the digital era of the 21st Century as our relationship with technology continues.

Lea Lund & Erik K: Nomads
On view through December 4

Lea Lund & Erik K’s photographic collaboration is a story about love, a photographer finding her muse and a subject claiming his identity. Lea, born and raised in Switzerland, and Erik, born and raised in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), met ten years ago on a street in Lausanne and have been together since. Their photographs explore their relationship, the history of Zaire, and the effects of colonization on Erik and his identity. In 1971, years after Joseph Désiré Mobutu overthrew the government and took control, he banned women from wearing pants and men from wearing suits and ties, forcing all men to wear a Mao collar jacket. Today, Erik makes his own hats, dresses, ties, and other clothing, proudly defying the ban that was forced upon him. Together, Lea and Erik create images that place Erik in settings that challenge the norms in which black men are often seen: instead of the chauffeur, he owns the car; instead of working the land, he surveys his property; instead of shining shoes, he is the shoe-wearing customer. Together, Lea and Erik call attention to the role of ownership, as seen through the poses and eyes of an elegant, black man.
