Summer Reading Challenge 2018 Wraps Up |
|
The Chandler Public Library's 2018 Summer Reading Challenge was a great success. The goals of this year's program included interrupting the summer slide so that kids won't lose the reading comprehension skills they learned during the school year, advancing early literacy skills by encouraging teens and adults to read with children and model independent reading behaviors, and building home libraries by offering the opportunity to earn a free book for each participant.
We are happy to report that the library registered
10,314 adults, teens, and children, the largest amount since 2006 and is an increase of 2,916 participants over last year. More importantly, the completion rate of 48.2% was the highest ever recorded for CPL, with nearly half of the program participants reading the full 1000 minutes. This translates to participants reading for approximately
8.4 million minutes this summer!!
Thank you to all who participated, as well as to the generous support of the Friends of the Chandler Public Library.

CPL Reads
|
|
Our online Facebook group, "
CPL Reads" is up and running. Each week we pose a few questions for our members to comment on and share their thoughts.
This month we are discussing "
The Bridge Ladies: a memoir," by Betsy Lerner.
Goodreads tells us, "
After a lifetime of defining herself against her mother's Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell generation, Betsy Lerner, a poster child for the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock 'n' Roll generation, finds herself back in her childhood home of New Haven, Connecticut, not five miles from the mother she spent a lifetime avoiding. When Roz needs help after surgery, it falls to Betsy to take care of her. She expected a week of tense civility; what she got instead were the Bridge Ladies. Impressed with their loyalty, she realized her generation was lacking. Facebook was great, but it wouldn't deliver a pot roast."
To join the group, logon to Facebook, search for "
CPL Reads" and request to join.Happy reading!
