2019 Spring Reading Program

Chandler Public Library is excited to once again partner with In-N-Out Burger® to provide this fun reading incentive program March 2 - April 13, 2019!

Children ages 4-12 who read five books at their reading level may earn a "Cover to Cover Club" reading certificate, along with a coupon for a free hamburger or cheeseburger from In-N-Out Burger®. Families can pick up a reading log from any Chandler Public Library to enroll their children in the program. Use the log to list titles read. After the five books are read, a parent or guardian signs the reading log and the child receives a certificate.

Each child may earn up to three certificates during the program, while supplies last. If a child between the eligible ages is unable to read themselves a parent may read to them to participate.

For more information, please call 480-782-2800 or drop by one of the four  library locations starting March 2.

Author Talk

Visit the Chandler Sunset Library on Wednesday, March 13 at 6:00 PM to hear from local author, Katrina Shawver, former columnist for the Arizona Republic. She will share experiences from her time meeting with then-85-year old Holocaust survivor, Henry Zguda, as well as her efforts in sharing his remarkable story through her book,  Henry: A Polish Swimmer's True Story of Friendship from Auschwitz to America. This award-winning biography is both a witness to the Holocaust through Polish eyes and the story of how Henry, a Polish, competitive swimmer, survives Auschwitz and Buchenwald by his wits, humor, luck, and friends.

Henry Zguda spent three years in Auschwitz and Buchenwald as a political prisoner during the second world-war. Since Henry's death in 2003, Shawver has dedicated much of her life to finishing this book, which recounts Henry's unique and powerful story. The book includes first-person narrative drawn from interviews with Henry, as well as original photos and documents.

Registration is not required. Please call 480-782-2800 or visit www.chandlerlibrary.org . for more information.
What Are Librarians Reading?

Looking for:
Biographies of Notable People?
Have a student doing a biography report? Or are you just looking to learn about notable people, past and present? Find biographical information through the library's website by using Biography in Context . All the articles are reprinted from reference books, magazines and newspapers, and other print sources - a wider range of resources than you can find in a Google search!

To access Biography in Context, start at chandlerlibrary.org and hover your mouse over the purple Research & Learning tab. Then click A-Z List of Resources and scroll down to choose Biography in Context. You'll need your library card and PIN if you're signing in from home. Browse through the people on the main page, or enter a name in the search box at the top. You can also use the Advanced Person Search to find people by time period, occupation, ethnicity and more. Articles will indicate what print publication they originally appeared in. Look for "Citation Tools" in the right sidebar to find out how to list articles on a bibliography or works cited page.

Can't make it in to the library to get a card? We now offer eCards that allow access to our online resources, including Biography in Context! If you're a Maricopa County resident, you can fill out the online form to register for your eCard. See more at our Get a Library Card page. eCard users can come in to the library at any time to upgrade to a full-access card that allows checkout of books and other physical materials.
