Resolution To Read More!
|
|
It is once again that time of year when people make resolutions ranging from saving money to exercising more. How about this year you make a resolution to read more? Reading has many benefits, including, but not limited to:
- improved focus and concentration,
- preserve brain health and lower the risk of Alzheimer's and Dementia
- alleviating stress, anxiety and depression
- boosting happiness and overall life satisfaction, and
- vocabulary expansion.
Reading accomplishes all of this by activating your mind, providing an escape from day-to-day life, and offering refreshed perspective for life's challenges.
By using your Chandler Public Library card, we have many resources to help you find the right books to help you make a successful and attainable resolution to read more in 2019!
Bookmatch - a free service available to CPL cardholders. You'll fill out a form and our librarians will respond to you within 5 days with a list of recommendations. Click here to get your own personalized reading list!
Novelist - a resource you can use to find book recommendations based on appeal factors, curated lists, and read-alikes for titles you enjoy. Learn how to use it here.
Books & Authors - explore the endless possibilities and combinations of books, authors, genres and topics. The ideal convergence of science and serendipity, this online resource leverages the Internet's unique capacity to create, build, communicate and sustain communities of readers.
Book Page - a monthly book review publication, serves as a recommendation guide to the best new books published every month. Read it online or pick up a copy at one of our four library locations.
CPL Reads - Our library's own Facebook group, where each month we choose a genre to discuss. We'll pose questions throughout the month and you can comment with your thoughts.
Making a resolution to read more doesn't mean you have to pick up a copy of Moby Dick or War and Peace. Start out small, read five minutes a day, and after a few weeks, increase it by a few minutes more. If you need recommendations on finding exciting, interesting and fun reading material, please ask any of our staff for assistance. Happy New Year!

Teens and pre-teens from across the Valley will soon be gathering at the Chandler Hamilton Library together for all things sci-fi, fantasy, anime, cosplay, gaming. The Library's eight annual LibCon is a free teens-only convention for fans of comics, video games and all things pop culture and offers teens a supportive environment for teens to gather and connect over shared hobbies and interests.
LibCon began eight years ago as a program targeting young people ages 12-18 who wanted to have the "Con" experience - like the recent Phoenix Comic Fest - but without adults, traveling time to Phoenix and expenses. Today, Chandler Public Library's LibCon is an annual program that teens not only love to attend, but participate in as well. This is a well-attended, free convention where teens can be themselves in a safe environment.
In order to help teens prepare for the event, a "Cos'truction Workshop" will take place at the Chandler Basha Library, 5990 South Val Vista Drive, on Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:15 pm. Participants can bring their material and designs to work on a costume during this drop-in workshop.
Sewing machines, scissors, cutting boards and other tools of the costume construction trade will be available to use. Basic sewing and cutting guidance provided as needed. Registration is required.
This year, LibCon will take place after regular library hours from 6-9:30 p.m. Saturday, January 19, at the Chandler Hamilton Library, 3700 S Arizona Ave. Returning this year will be a cosplay fashion show as well as the K-Pop groups from both Hamilton and Basha. There will be aDJ playing music, as well as emceeing the event. Two food vendors will be available selling snacks and the Hamilton High Digital Arts Club will be showing teens how they make the digital art creations they come up with.
