SIDS & Secondhand Smoke
October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month. SIDS is the leading cause of death among babies between 1 month and 1 year of age. 1 Secondhand smoke exposure and smoking during pregnancy increases the risk for SIDS. 1 Research shows that chemicals in secondhand smoke appear to affect the brain in ways that interfere with its regulation of infants' breathing. 1

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that parents can help protect their babies from SIDS by not smoking while pregnant, not smoking in the home or around the baby, and putting the baby down to sleep on its back. 1 For help to quit smoking, contact 1-800-NO-BUTTS.
