Dr. Marcus D. Goncalves Inducted into American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) |
Dr. Marcus D. Goncalves, the Ralph L. Nachman, M.D. Research Scholar and an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, has been elected a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) for 2024. The ASCI is one of the nation’s oldest nonprofit medical honor societies and focuses on the unique role of physician-scientists in research, clinical care and medical education. Read More

Dr. Arnab Ghosh Named an NIH 2024 Climate and Health Scholar |
Dr. Arnab Ghosh, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, was recently named a National Institutes of Health (NIH) 2024 Climate and Health Scholar. This is the NIH’s second year sponsoring the program. Dr. Ghosh is one of seven established scientists with expertise in climate and health who will continue work on the NIH’s effort to reduce health threats from climate change across the lifespan and build health resilience in individuals, communities, and nations around the world, especially among those at highest risk. Dr. Anne Bass was appointed treasurer of the American College for Rheumatology (ACR). This is a position on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. She will serve in this role for 2024-2025; after, she will serve as president-elect and subsequently president of ACR for 2027-2028.
Dr. Arnab Ghosh recently published a study in JAMA Cardiology which found that removing race information from cardiovascular risk calculators—which predict the probability of developing heart disease—doesn’t affect patients’ risk scores. Read More

Dr. David Artis is co-leading a new consortium spearheaded by Dr. Brian S. Kim of Mount Sinai designed to reshape our understanding of fundamental biology and human disease in how we treat chronic diseases. The Allen Discovery Center for Neuroimmune Interactions is funded at $10 million over four years by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, with a total potential for $20 million over eight years. In recognition of Weill Cornell Medicine’s history of over 125 years, we are pleased to introduce Vignettes, a new historic retrospective highlighting prominent physicians and topics connected to the Weill Department of Medicine.
Remembering Our First Woman Doctor
Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman in the United States to receive an M.D., graduating from Geneva Medical College in 1849. While working at La Maternité in Paris, France, she contracted purulent ophthalmia from an infant, causing her to lose sight in one eye. Her decision to give up her career as a surgeon opened the door to new opportunities in the burgeoning modern health care field. Together with her sister Emily, Dr. Blackwell founded the first hospital in New York City staffed entirely by women in 1857, which evolved into today’s NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. The sisters also created the Woman’s Medical College of the New York Infirmary in 1868, which was devoted entirely to the medical education of women. It was eventually absorbed into what is today known as Weill Cornell Medicine.
