February 2019

Springtime waits just around the corner, and Cy-Hope is ramping up for another huge season of our Dierker's Champs baseball teams! We have a record number of students signed up on a record number of teams. We still need umpires and a couple of middle school coaches, so check out our Dierker's Champs article if you can help us provide the lessons that teamwork and participating in a sport provide to some of our students that would not otherwise have the opportunity to play an organized sport. We have helped 7,396 students that want to get a jump on their college and career readiness through our Providing Opportunities Program - offering financial assistance to students that want to take Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, or Career and Technical Education classes, but need help to do so. Check out our Giving Corner if you could make a donation to help us continue to meet 100% of the need for our CFISD students in this program.

Cy-Hope Happenings
Operation Sinkhole - Volunteer Spotlight
The Houston Food Bank delivers the Backpack Buddy food bags once a week. The only way their truck can get to the Backpack Barn at Cy Hope is on the gravel road around the pond. In October, the road developed a large sinkhole, rendering it impassable. The Backpack Crew rose to the challenge of getting the food to the Barn.  The first attempt involved unloading the pallets of food to a trailer pulled by a truck. While they made it work, it was difficult to transfer the pallets from the truck to the trailer.  The next try involved renting a U-Haul truck. They backed the U-Haul up to the back of the Food Bank truck. They could then easily transfer the pallets into the U-Haul. Once the U-Haul got to the Backpack Barn, they had to offload each pallet by hand onto the dock. The six pallets each have 30 boxes of food - that is a lot of boxes to move! The crew did this for seven weeks while the road was out of commission. It was such a tough job! We really appreciate these volunteers that always go above and beyond to get the job done: Rodney Witthaus, Ken White, Ken Winkelmann, Terry Vasut, Mark Hinzie and Albert Cummings.
