January 2020

Happy new year! Throughout 2020, Cy-Hope will showcase one program in each of our monthly newsletters. We will continue to provide information on upcoming events and general Cy-Hope news, but with a focus on the program that has the most relevant information and pressing needs for that time of year. We hope you find this format helpful and certainly welcome your feedback on how we can best create awareness of the amazing things happening through your participation with Cy-Hope - #bethedifference - 2020 here we come!
Spotlight on Dierker's Champs
Cy-Hope's Dierker's Champs develops champions on and off the field under the direction of former Houston Astros All Star pitcher, announcer, and manager, Larry Dierker. We partner with Cy-Fair ISD Title I schools to host teams and provide fields. In three years, we've grown from six teams and 90 players in three elementary schools to 25 teams and 375 players in 18 elementary and middle schools. We have received J.J. Watt Foundation grants to help fund equipment for each of the Dierker's Champs middle school teams. But, we still have many needs for you to donate and volunteer for our program:
  • donate here to support our field and umpire costs;
  • volunteer for our Saturday games, to help with concessions and other game-day activities;
  • volunteer as an umpire (see below for training information).
Dierker's Champs is teaming up with TASO (Texas Association of Sports Officials) to provide our umpire training and scheduling for the coming baseball season.  Umpiring is a great way for people of all ages that love baseball to give back to the community while earning some extra money. All we ask is that you be at least 16 years old and have a love for baseball. Training will be provided for games, including calling mechanics, rules, and conflict resolution. Please email us for more information.  Training will take place in late January and early February. Our baseball season will run from mid-March through mid-May. Schedules are flexible - work as much or as little as you want.
Stories of Hope from Dierker's Champs
Cy-Hope received the following letters from two of our Dierker's Champs players from last season:

Dear Dierker's Champs,
I love playing baseball a lot, playing baseball has made me a better person. Thank you for buying us t-shirts and hats. Thank you a lot for letting us play baseball. We like our new friends and teams. Thanks you for letting us eat after practice. It is fun playing baseball. It inspires our team and our school!!!!! Thank you.

First Grade
Since I have been on the baseball team Dr.Marz has been telling me that have not been getting into lots of trouble lately. She said I've been good in my classes and in my large groups. I'm trying to get my act together in Art. I have been trying to be so good so I can stay on the baseball team, and I really don't want to let my teammates down all because of my behavior. That would just be unfair for my team,and I don't want that to happen. I've really been trying to keep my spot as Pitcher. I have been trying hard, I practice 2 times a week not including baseball practice and throw my arm out like never before. If I didn't care about baseball, I would want do nothing in the game. Or just sit on the bench. Now I just told you why I have been so good in baseball. Can't wait for you to read it.

Meet our Staff

Sheri Lee, Dierker's Champs Program Director
Sheri has held various positions in the hair industry for 29 years. She started as a hairstylist, then worked her way up from a single store manager to a multi-store area manager. She then became an advanced educator for a large franchise. It was then that she met her husband and went on to have four kids. She decided three years ago to own her own business where she could work part-time and spend the other time as Program Director for Dierker's Champs. Because she has a son that has a love for the game, she got involved with the program. She fell in love with the idea of being part of an organization where their mission is to transform the lives of kids by providing the best baseball instruction possible in a positive and encouraging environment. Sheri is an active member of Foundry Church and volunteers a great amount of her time with Foundry, Cy-Hope functions, donating her services to help people in need, and helping in her kids' activities. She is very passionate about what Cy-Hope is doing in the community to help make a difference and feels blessed to be a part of it!
Derek Dover, Dierker's Champs Assistant Program Director
Derek works full-time for a large technology company in Houston for 23 years. A Louisiana native, Derek pursued an accounting degree from Texas A&M (class of '91). He moved to the Cypress area shortly after graduation.He is married and has two sons - ages 27 and 12. Derek's younger son began playing baseball at age 5 - and was routinely playing games against Dierker's Champs team in the Cy-Fair Sports Association league. Derek has been involved with coaching his son's teams for the past five years. During that time, Derek got the team involved with helping Dierker's Champs run their annual skills camp and eventually helping plan for DC's transition to an independent baseball league. Derek is an active member of Bayou City Fellowship Church and volunteers a great amount of his time with both Bayou City Fellowship and Cy-Hope functions, as well as helping in his son's activities. Derek is very passionate about giving back to the community and is glad to be on board with what Cy-Hope is doing in the lives of Cy-Fair kids.
