Christmas Cantata this Sunday
Sunday morning at 10:30 we will enjoy a mostly-musical liturgy with our chancel choir and organist, Vlada Moran, performing Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata, under the direction of Cheryl Anderson. Cheryl collaborated with Pinkham in 1994 conducting the first performance of a work he composed for Church of the Wayfarer, and she is delighted for this opportunity to share his genius with Peace United Church of Christ.
Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata is a blend of the old and the new. The first movement announces Christ’s birth with a fanfare in the style of Gabrieli, followed with a celebration-like statement of changing meters, fast tempi, and bursts of joyousness. The second movement is mysterious, reflecting on the wonders of the nativity story and virgin birth. Movement three is a huge celebration, culminating with fanfares and splashy flourishes.
A prolific composer whose output ranged from symphonies to art songs, Daniel Pinkham, 1923-2006, was born in Massachusetts. He said the defining event in his early organ and musical studies was when he heard the Trapp Family Singers in 1939, shortly after they escaped from Germany. As a student at Harvard he studied composition with Walter Piston, Aaron Copland, and Archibald Davidson. Later he studied harpsichord and organ under the tutelage of E. Power Biggs. At Tanglewood, he studied composition with Samuel Barber, Arthur Honegger, and Nadia Boulanger. He taught at the Boston Conservatory and New England Conservatory of Music until his death. He was the organist at the King’s Chapel in Boston, was featured on CBS Radio Network, played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and was the primary keyboardist for Alan Hovaness in his violin recitals.

Thank You For Supporting the Christmas Project!
We did it! Our church community has provided gifts for sixty seasonal farm worker families.
For Christmas, a yet to be born child will get a huge box of diapers. And a 73 year old Grandfather will get a new warm jacket. These gifts make all the difference for these families.
On Sunday, December 18, you can help distribute the gifts to the families. To do so, drive to the San Andreas Community, 295 San Andreas Road, Watsonville at approximately 1:00pm. When you arrive, park right outside the entrance and then walk up the road to the Community Center. Look for a huge truck that has the gifts. When ready, Gladys Anderson will give instructions. You will get a big bag of gifts to personally deliver to the home of each family.
Don’t be surprised if you receive a delicious plate of tamales from the family! After the gifts are delivered, the Community always hosts a wonderful lunch. After San Andreas, the second Community we visit is Murphy’s Camp.
The gifts from our church go to families at Murphy’s. Again, they will provide another nice lunch. You can choose how many camps you want to visit. Unfortunately, I will not be able to join you on the 18th. Ask your friends about carpooling and enjoy. It is a wonderful way to celebrate the Holidays. Many thanks, Anna Hackenbracht

Whose Check Is This Anyway?
Have you, or do you plan to give a gift to PUCC via your retirement, or donor advised fund? We have recently received a number of gift donations from these types of funds that have no identifying attributes.
We would love to be able to acknowledge these gifts, so please include a memo with your check -OR- email the office with: your name and where the funds are to be directed!
As always, thank you so much for your generosity and commitment to PUCC!

What About Masks?
Committed to caring for our neighbors and offering hospitality, we require that you wear a mask while indoors on the church campus. If you forget to bring your own, we have masks available in the sanctuary and in our meeting rooms and classrooms. Please remember that not everyone is vaccinated and that vaccines are not perfect protection against Covid. Wearing a mask is a sensible and easy way to inhibit the spread of this disease. Thank you for your kind consideration of the health and safety of our entire community at PUCC.

We Want Your Face!
Most of us cringe when we see ourselves in photos, but you probably have one photo that shows your face the way you would like other people to see it. We want that photo for our records! Pastor Dave especially is interested in having a pictorial record because there are so many of you he hasn't yet been able to meet in person.
Here's how you do it...please email Devon a digital photo of yourself and she will take care of the rest! Thank you. We look forward to "seeing" you soon.

Office Hours!
Some days we're on campus, some days we're remote, but 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, staff are attending to the business of our church office: monitoring e-mail, answering telephones and/or responding to messages, working on the dozens of different projects and connections that keep our ministry moving forward. As on-campus activities increase in the months ahead, so will our in-person presence in the church office, Monday through Thursday.
If you plan to come into the office, please call ahead to schedule a time when we know someone will be in to assist you. You can reach us by e-mail using the list below or by phone, 831-426-2010.
Pastor Dave works from the church office, Monday through Thursday, and most weeks will have office hours on Saturday too, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday is his day off. In case of emergency, the pastor is available by cell phone, 773-255-8095. If you would like to schedule a meeting or would like to "drop by", please contact us via email using this link to make an arrangement.
