Moderator Notes - Peace Pods II January 11, 2023

Plan ahead to participate in a small group gathering to share your views on the mission, vision and ministries of Peace United Church of Christ. Let’s meet and consider with discernment who we are today and where we are going as a faithful community. This is an opportunity to share your input which is welcomed.

Initially, Pastor Dave will lead two plenary groups: January 29th after service and January 31st at 6:00 pm, both in the Fellowship Hall. Choose one to attend.

Sign up for joining a Peace Pod by January 27th through this link

There are currently 11 days/times to choose from, most in person, held at PUCC or in someone’s home. One is led via Zoom. Should none of these accommodate your schedule, please write to [email protected] to let me know potential days and times and we’ll possibly form an additional zoom group.

If you have any questions, please reach out.

Thank you, Maryse Postlewaite

Homeless Garden Project hosts day of service

The Homeless Garden Project will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service for community members from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Homeless Garden Project Farm on Shaffer Road in Santa Cruz.

The project invites the community to participate in winter farm tasks to prepare for spring planting. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is an annual event where community members are encouraged to volunteer in their community.

Volunteers will have an opportunity to work on several different projects happening at the farm. As a small production farm, the project will adjust farm tasks depending on the weather. If it rains on Jan. 16, the event will be moved to Jan. 21.

Volunteers should bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Closed-toed shoes are required. Lunch will be provided. This event is free and open to the public.

Men's Group

The next meeting of our nascent Peace Men’s Community, aka, Men Eating and Talking will be held on Saturday, January 14 at 6 PM in the community dining room at Walnut Commons, 190 Walnut Ave. in Santa Cruz. Walnut Commons is a 3 story structure at the NE corner of Walnut & Center Streets.

This will be a potluck; bring your favorite, either an entree, vegetable, salad, fruit or dessert and beverage. Please RSVP with your interest in attending to [email protected]

Dial 307 at the intercom at the Walnut Ave entrance to the building. All men are welcome.

We expect this to be an ongoing group, whose purpose is to grow and deepen supportive relationships with one another, engage in outdoor activities such as a hike, contribute to service projects, or… you name it.

Senior Perennials will meet this Sunday, January 15, 2023 after church in the fireside lounge.

Please join us as we have some fun making colorful Zentangle designs.

Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. The patterns are simple, drawn one step at a time It can bring you into a meditative state as you draw. There is no right or wrong in Zentangle (just beauty).

Lisa Hoesing will lead us in how to add color to our paper in a way that will look like something from a map. Then we will add different kinds of tangles/ patterns one line at at time, keeping it easy. it will be lots of fun and you’ll end up with a beautiful piece of art afterwards.

Sign Up to Be A Liturgist!

We would love to have you as a liturgist (reader) in one of our Sunday morning worship services. It's a wonderful way of serving!

Sign up for a Sunday to read live and in-the-flesh and we'll connect with you by e-mail on the Tuesday prior, sending all the information you'll need for getting ready.

If you'd like to give it a try, click on this link to choose a date.
What About Masks?

Committed to caring for our neighbors and offering hospitality, we require that you wear a mask while indoors on the church campus. If you forget to bring your own, we have masks available in the sanctuary and in our meeting rooms and classrooms. Please remember that not everyone is vaccinated and that vaccines are not perfect protection against Covid. Wearing a mask is a sensible and easy way to inhibit the spread of this disease. Thank you for your kind consideration of the health and safety of our entire community at PUCC.
We Want Your Face!

Most of us cringe when we see ourselves in photos, but you probably have one photo that shows your face the way you would like other people to see it. We want that photo for our records! Pastor Dave especially is interested in having a pictorial record because there are so many of you he hasn't yet been able to meet in person.

Here's how you do it...please email Devon a digital photo of yourself and she will take care of the rest! Thank you. We look forward to "seeing" you soon.
Office Hours!

Some days we're on campus, some days we're remote, but 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, staff are attending to the business of our church office: monitoring e-mail, answering telephones and/or responding to messages, working on the dozens of different projects and connections that keep our ministry moving forward. As on-campus activities increase in the months ahead, so will our in-person presence in the church office, Monday through Thursday.

If you plan to come into the office, please call ahead to schedule a time when we know someone will be in to assist you. You can reach us by e-mail using the list below or by phone, 831-426-2010.

Pastor Dave works from the church office, Monday through Thursday, and most weeks will have office hours on Saturday too, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday is his day off. In case of emergency, the pastor is available by cell phone, 773-255-8095. If you would like to schedule a meeting or would like to "drop by", please contact us via email using this link to make an arrangement.
