Choral Notes: by Cheryl Anderson
This Sunday morning in our 10:30 a.m. worship service, the Chancel Choir will sing the “Kyrie” movement from Maurice Duruflé’s beloved Requiem (A Mass for the Dead.) The choir will sing selected movements from Requiem on Sunday mornings through the season of Lent, offering the full work in a Good Friday concert at the church, April 3 at 7pm.
“Kyrie” is the second movement of this requiem mass, with three parts that follow the structure of the text: (A) Kyrie eleison-Lord have mercy; (B) Christe eleison-Christ have mercy; (C) Kyrie eleison-Lord have mercy. In part A, the organ and full choir weave a melody which then twines itself into a beautiful harmony of individual voice parts, rising and falling, growing and receding, in a complexity of musical ideas. The B section allows the soprano and alto parts to explore a new melodic idea which is more insistent and culminates in a declamatory “Kyrie!” as the tenors and basses re-enter, to usher the return of Kyrie eleison-Lord have mercy, the final C section which completes the opening idea of asking for mercy for the soul who has died.
Duruflé’s musical output was not huge. He did, however, leave an indelible mark on a new compositional style. His use of Gregorian Chant melodies and practices continue to inspire beautiful music that is being written today. He died June 16, 1986. He and his wife, a brilliant organist in her own right, lived and worked in the United States and were well-known in this country.
These times, these texts, and Duruflé’s artful composition offer us an opportunity to explore losses and hopes, sorrow and joys, and all aspects of the human condition with deeper appreciation for our capacity to love and care about others.

WEDNESDAYS IN LENT
Wednesday evenings in Lent, February 25 through March 25, we’ll gather in the sanctuary 7:00 to 7:59pm, to pray for Courage and Healing, with music, scripture, guided meditation, and a chance to share. Along with these traditional elements, our gatherings will be informed by reading from How We Learn to Be Brave, by Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal Bishop of
Washington, D.C. (Avery/Penguin Random House, 2023.) Especially helpful for people of faith in these challenging times, the book is widely available in local bookstores and online, and you are encouraged to read it as a part of your Lenten spiritual journey.

This Friday February 20th! Please join the Peace United team, Peace, Love, Chili, to raise funds for the mid-county faith communities shower trailer program for unhoused neighbors. This year's chili cook off will be held at a new venue: Twin Lakes Church, so it will be a little easier to reach for people on the Westside of town.
Please join us for this fun, ecumenical event from 6-8 pm this Friday! Our team is using a delicious vegetarian recipe from Suzanne McLean.

CYF Theme: Lent
This week marks the beginning of Lent. As we enter this contemplative season, we are sharing the story of Jesus spending 40 days in the desert preparing for his ministry. During this time, we are reflecting on how to listen to God and the universe, as we remember Jesus’ retreat into the wilderness.
Our featured story this week is "Listen" by Holly M. McGhee. This beautiful book illustrates how to engage with the world around us—breathing, tasting, and listening with our hearts to the story of the universe. May this season be a time for all of us to consider how we can become better listeners and citizens of the world.
You can find this week's story here:https://youtu.be/RxIFl88XTxA

Please Register
Saturday, February 21st
How does some peace and quiet sound right now? Could you use some dedicated time to do the nurturing things you love, and feel the support of your community? Is there something you need to let go of, or something new you're contemplating?Saturday, February 21st will be a wonderful day of quiet retreat here at Peace, with the company of friends to warm your heart as you tend to the needs of your spirit.
We'll have optional times of prayer and music in the sanctuary, a morning expressive arts class for those who would like to join in, lunch and dinner to enjoy in stillness, and plenty of time and space for everyone to nurture themselves. Bring what you need for whatever your planned activities are - your pillow to nap in the lounge, your yoga mat to stretch out, those art supplies that have been collecting dust, or that book you've not found time to finish reading.
There is *no cost to participate* - your presence is your best contribution. If you'd like to attend, please contact Lanakila (lanakila@lanakilamusic.com). We're also looking for folks who would take joy in preparing simple vegetarian-friendly dishes for our communal lunch and dinner, so if the kitchen is your happy place, let Lanakila know!

Game Night and
Light Bites!
February 27th 6:00-8:30 PM
“What do you guys think? Shall we make it a date?” questioned Billy.
“I don’t know, B-b-billy. I thought I might stay home and chill with some honey oats” ruminated Horace.
“You gotta be ki-ki-kidding me,” retorted Billy. “I have heard that the games are fun!”
”And there’s a lot of la-la-lafter,” bleated Cabrito.
“I’m definitely going,” snorted Porkito. “I can’t pass up the delicious Light Bites!”
“Oh-oh-okay,” bah-bah-babbled Horace. “I don’t wanna be a party-pooper.”
“YAY,” the four companions chorused.
Off in the distance they heard the joyous crowing of Rooster, “There are all kinds of games to-doodle-do!”
Friday, February 27, 6:00 to 8:30pm… j-j-join us!
