Financial State of Peace - Join us for an informational meeting

Thank you to all who attended the budget update meeting held on May 31. At that meeting, you listened to the overview of our budget situation and the status of Peace Village housing. Table groups then conferred to propose ideas to help church leadership determine a path forward in our finances. 

As a follow-up to that meeting, we are convening another budget update on Sunday, June 21, immediately following worship. 

At this meeting, you will have a preview of a reasonable budget that the church council hopes present for approval at our June 28 annual congregational meeting.  

This is a budget proposal that would reflect a realistic estimate of what our pledges for the coming year will be. To date, we have $228,500 in pledges from 58 households, still below our target of $300,000.

We will provide light snacks for this gathering in the Fellowship Hall. Please plan to attend.

Dear Beloved Members and Friends of Peace United Church of Christ

More than anything else, what keeps our church vibrant and meaningful to us and to the wider community, is the loving engagement of each one of you in our shared vision and mission. Through scripture, prayer, community support and action we demonstrate our faith in Jesus’s promise to us: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

In the Ministries and Committees booklet update, and in our Annual Report, you will read about the hard work and dedication of our community over the past year. These documents will be available soon. Please take time to read and absorb all that our congregation has accomplished and has yet to accomplish as we approach the annual meeting. 

I encourage all members of the congregation to attend the meeting. Your comments and questions are important as we plan for the upcoming year. And we need your vote on approval of the slate of new council members, the budget, and the annual report. Friends of our congregation are welcome to attend as well. Though non-members do not have a vote, we value their presence and contributions to table discussions.

Save The Date!

Calling all beach lovers! If you are ready for a little service, fellowship, and fun under the sun in God's creation, I hope you will join us for our upcoming beach cleanup. We are caretaking the beach where quite a few of us have been baptized in this church.

We meet in the dirt parking lot past the ranger's station at 10am for a few words of welcome and orientation, and to distribute supplies. If you have work gloves like gardening gloves, you may wish to bring those. Likewise, if you prefer collecting trash in a bucket rather than a bag, you can bring one from home. Sun protection and closed toed shoes are recommended. We are usually only out there for an hour or so, but it's amazing to see the difference we can make as a group in that period of time!

Please let Lanakila Iesū know ahead of time if you're planning on joining in.

Floral Arrangements for Worship

Thank you to those of you who have offered to bring flowers for the Sanctuary! We have had such beautiful arrangements celebrating Pentecost and Pride. There are several weeks unclaimed in July and August so please sign up in the narthex or email Lynette.

Flowers from your garden, the grocery store or a florist would be great. Even a blooming or beautiful houseplant would help us focus on God's beauty as we settle into the music and words of worship. Sign up, bring your floral gift before worship, set it on the table under the pulpit and know that your generosity enhances our worship experience.

The arrangement on July 12 is a gift from Melodee and Larry Kistner in celebration of their daughter Emily's birthday.

The flowers on June 28 will be picked from Elizabeth Schilling's garden and arranged by her family in her memory.

Financial Weather Report



The financial outlook for the remainder of this fiscal year and into the next is concerning. At the end of April and moving into May, there was a significant gap between revenues and expenses. Total revenues were $26,135, while expenses reached $50,188. On average we need a minimum of $45,500 to meet our monthly operational expenses.

We approved a budget with the anticipated pledge amount of $275,000. Our pledges have come in shy of $245,000—not enough to cover our monthly expenses for the year. We projected last June that our 25/26 budget would end at a deficit of $24,500. This projected deficit plus not reaching the $275,000 in pledges means we will end this year in the red over $50,000. To cover this shortage, we will have to pull money from our reserves which is quite low ($58,000) due to having to transfer money into our local bank account to cover operational expenses. 

Our reserves will be exhausted within the next fiscal year, leaving no remaining buffer to support operations. We need to act prudently and quickly to determine ways to replenish our reserves and to meet the demands of our monthly expenses.

*As a guideline, wise fiscal policy recommends maintaining at least three to six months of operating expenses in reserve. Currently, we have only one month available.

The Vera Taylor Scholarship Committee is accepting applications from church members for scholarships for 2026-2027.

Who can apply?

If you are a full-time student or planning to become one, and have been a member of Peace United Church of Christ for at least one year, you are eligible to apply for the Vera Taylor Scholarship.

Qualifications:

Attend a college or university or an accredited vocational school, such as culinary arts, dental hygiene, or the like, in an undergraduate or graduate-level program.

For Mini-grants to learn or enhance skills and strategies for church or community outreach activities by taking training in a program that leads to a certificate or degree for such things but not limited to Hospice, elder care, child care, working with homeless persons or prisoners, crisis hotlines and counseling, English as a second language, and immigration support.

Buildings and Grounds Poetry: Mower Haiku

One of the many tasks of the Buildings and Grounds committee is to mow the upper terrace for fire safety. Beginning in early spring, we mow the terrace at least four times, ending when the rainy season ends and the grass stops growing. This is a series of haiku verses (with illustrations) generated by AI to document the work. It was fun working with multiple AI engines to make these poems and images. I offer them for your entertainment.

I. February

Late winter rains done — the meadow calls me back out. Time to begin again.

II. The Mower

Silent electric hum, no exhaust, just turning wheels — the grass yields gently.

III. The Raven

He walks the cut edge, inspecting each fallen stalk — not pleased, not displeased.

IV. The Hawk

Red tail tilts, then dives — the mower flushes his lunch. We work well together.

V. The Eucalyptus

Straight toward the tall grove — the cut line follows my boot. Half done. Half to go.

VI. Two Fridays

One battery gone — the tall May grass wants more time. I'll come back next week.

VII. Fire Season

I mow not for beauty — these dry hills hold a quick spark. This is care, not art.

VIII. June

Last row of the year. The raven tilts his head once — good enough, he says.

Piano by Moonlight: Candlelit Evenings of Rest and Reverie

Solo piano music by our own Aidan Santa Cruz every Tuesday night at 7:00 to 9:00 at Peace United. Aidan is heart centered and plays free improvisations inspired by classical, jazz and spiritual traditions.
