Celebrating PRIDE!



This Sunday, June 7, Peace United Church of Christ will be out for PRIDE! At 9:30am we will join with other queer affirming faith communities for an interfaith PRIDE worship service in Plaza Lane (across from the Hidden Peak Teahouse downtown.) Afterward, you are invited to join the PUCC delegation marching in the PRIDE parade which gets underway at 11am. Also that morning, the Rev. Matt Broadbent will lead a service of Holy Communion in our sanctuary, at 900 High Street, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Whichever service you decide to attend, wear your Peace United t-shirt with our rainbow-dove logo!

For the parade… Peace United is #63 in the order. Our delegation assembles on Cathcart toward Front Street, between 10am and 10:30am. Join us there!

Don’t forget that next Sunday, June 14, at 3pm, we will present Considering Matthew Shepard, a dramatic musical work that explores the life and legacy of a 21-year-old gay college student whose infamous murder in 1998 stirred a national movement in support of Queer youth and justice for LGBTQ+ people. Tickets are $25, available through our website, www.PeaceUnited.org.  

We could still use volunteers to:

• Transport chairs from church to the interfaith service downtown 
• Return of everything to church 
• Parade monitors for our contingent 
• Organization of signs and banners

Our Annual Fund Drive for the budget year beginning July 2026 is happening now! Consecration Sunday will be June 14, when we celebrate the generosity of our members and friends.

Each pledge supports our operating expenses and ministries. Meeting our 300K goal would avoid dipping into our reserves altogether… a first in over 8 years. And meeting this goal would support the strength, flexibility, and spiritual health of our congregation.

Check out the Hot Air Balloon in the narthex to note our progress. To date, we have a total of $218,478 in pledges. Thank you to all the households who have submitted their pledges! Just over half of our congregation has now pledged.  

For those who have not yet pledged: please consider increasing your pledge to address the continued increase in expenses. The Finance team hopes to create a balanced budget at our Congregational Meeting on June 28th!

Please let the office know if you did not receive a pledge form. (They were sent out three weeks ago.) We’ve made it easy to fill out; and we need a current one each year. Once completed, you can place it in the offertory basket on Sundays, bring it to the office or mail it in.

An Invitation!

Anyone in our congregation is invited to bring floral arrangements to enhance the beauty of our Sanctuary during the summer months. You may want to choose a holiday date, a date that is meaningful to you or a date you know you'll have a garden full of color. Flowers from your garden (or your neighbor's) or purchased and arranged would be delightful. Bring them before worship on the Sunday you have chosen and place on the table under the pulpit. It's a large space so feel free to make your contribution.

Financial Weather Report



The financial outlook for the remainder of this fiscal year and into the next is concerning. At the end of April and moving into May, there was a significant gap between revenues and expenses. Total revenues were $26,135, while expenses reached $50,188. On average we need a minimum of $45,500 to meet our monthly operational expenses.

We approved a budget with the anticipated pledge amount of $275,000. Our pledges have come in shy of $245,000—not enough to cover our monthly expenses for the year. We projected last June that our 25/26 budget would end at a deficit of $24,500. This projected deficit plus not reaching the $275,000 in pledges means we will end this year in the red over $50,000. To cover this shortage, we will have to pull money from our reserves which is quite low ($58,000) due to having to transfer money into our local bank account to cover operational expenses. 

Our reserves will be exhausted within the next fiscal year, leaving no remaining buffer to support operations. We need to act prudently and quickly to determine ways to replenish our reserves and to meet the demands of our monthly expenses.

*As a guideline, wise fiscal policy recommends maintaining at least three to six months of operating expenses in reserve. Currently, we have only one month available.

Financial State of Peace - Join us for an informational meeting

About 30 members and friends gathered after worship last Sunday to learn more about Peace's financial situation. We heard reports from the Finance Committee, the Peace Village Housing representatives and the Stewardship Committee. Excellent questions were posed and suggestions offered. If you missed last Sunday, please join us after worship on Sunday, June 21 to consider the church’s likely financial outlook with the delay of Peace Village Housing, and review different options for supporting our mission and ministry with a balanced budget. Church leaders want you to see the numbers and have an opportunity for prayerful reflection as we move toward the congregation’s annual meeting, June 28, and the possibility of difficult budget decisions. 

We will also offer a Zoom meeting option. Date and time will be announced shortly.

Dear Beloved Members and Friends of Peace United Church of Christ

More than anything else, what keeps our church vibrant and meaningful to us and to the wider community, is the loving engagement of each one of you in our shared vision and mission. Through scripture, prayer, community support and action we demonstrate our faith in Jesus’s promise to us: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

In the Ministries and Committees booklet update, and in our Annual Report, you will read about the hard work and dedication of our community over the past year. These documents will be available soon. Please take time to read and absorb all that our congregation has accomplished and has yet to accomplish as we approach the annual meeting. 

I encourage all members of the congregation to attend the meeting. Your comments and questions are important as we plan for the upcoming year. And we need your vote on approval of the slate of new council members, the budget, and the annual report. Friends of our congregation are welcome to attend as well. Though non-members do not have a vote, we value their presence and contributions to table discussions.

The Vera Taylor Scholarship Committee is accepting applications from church members for scholarships for 2026-2027.

Who can apply?

If you are a full-time student or planning to become one, and have been a member of Peace United Church of Christ for at least one year, you are eligible to apply for the Vera Taylor Scholarship.

Qualifications:

Attend a college or university or an accredited vocational school, such as culinary arts, dental hygiene, or the like, in an undergraduate or graduate-level program.

For Mini-grants to learn or enhance skills and strategies for church or community outreach activities by taking training in a program that leads to a certificate or degree for such things but not limited to Hospice, elder care, child care, working with homeless persons or prisoners, crisis hotlines and counseling, English as a second language, and immigration support.

Piano by Moonlight: Candlelit Evenings of Rest and Reverie

Solo piano music by our own Aidan Santa Cruz every Tuesday night at 7:00 to 9:00 at Peace United. Aidan is heart centered and plays free improvisations inspired by classical, jazz and spiritual traditions.

Monday through Friday, from 9 am - 2 pm staff are in the office, attending to the business of our church: monitoring e-mail, answering telephones and/or responding to messages, working on the dozens of different projects and connections that keep our ministry moving forward.
