Penquis Mourns the Loss of Two Volunteers

We are saddened to share the passing of two dedicated volunteer drivers, Amy Tatlock and William "Bill" Arisimeek. Through their generosity and commitment, they helped community members access essential transportation and reach their destinations with care and compassion.



We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones. Their contributions to the community will be remembered and deeply appreciated.

Community Comes Together for We've Got Your Back

Community support for Penquis’ We’ve Got Your Back program continues to make a difference for local students. This year, Ava Burke of Brewer, now 15, collected more than 600 backpacks for area children, continuing a tradition she began at age 6. Supported by family, friends, and local businesses, Ava’s efforts have helped hundreds of students start the school year prepared for success.

The community once again came together in support of local students through the annual Fill the Bus event, held in collaboration with Heart of Maine United Way. Thanks to the generosity of Cyr Bus Line, dedicated volunteers, local businesses, organizations, and community members, the effort collected much-needed school supplies for area children. Supporters also visited Shaw’s in Dover-Foxcroft to make donations and learn more about the program.

Additional support came through Beyond the Backpack, a back-to-school drive hosted by Townsquare Media at the Stonington Furniture parking lot in Brewer. The drive provided new clothing, socks, children’s shoes, school snacks, and other essential items to help students start the school year prepared and confident.

These community-driven efforts are helping Penquis provide backpacks and school supplies to more than 1,200 students through We’ve Got Your Back, a partnership with Blueberry Broadcasting sponsored by Katahdin Trust.

Penquis Launches a New Website

Finding support, resources, and information just got easier for Maine communities. Penquis is excited to launch its newly redesigned website, created to help individuals and families quickly connect with the programs, services, and support they need.



After nearly two years of planning and development, the new site features improved navigation, updated content, and a more user-friendly experience. The enhanced design makes it easier for visitors to access information while allowing Penquis to keep resources current as programs continue to grow and evolve.

Foster Grandparents Making a Lasting Impact

The Penquis Foster Grandparent Program continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children across Maine. During the past year, 46 volunteers contributed more than 27,500 hours of service, mentoring and supporting 156 children directly while positively impacting hundreds more across a 14-county service area. Supervisors reported strong gains in school readiness, academic engagement, and social-emotional development among participating students.



The true impact of the program is perhaps best expressed by one volunteer: “It is the best thing of all to be able to help a child be a better reader, writer, math problem solver, etc. To have fun while you are doing the work and to watch the sense of accomplishment and self-esteem they develop will never get old.” This reflection highlights the lasting value of the Foster Grandparent Program, where caring mentors help children build skills, confidence, and the foundation for future success.

Summer Connections Across Penquis

This summer, Penquis programs have been creating opportunities for community members of all ages to connect, learn, and thrive.

Supporting Recovery and Connection

Penquis was proud to sponsor and attend Bangor Area Recovery Network’s (BARN) LobsterMania event, an evening that celebrated the power of recovery, community, and resilience. The event brought people together in support of BARN’s mission of providing hope, connection, and opportunities for individuals in recovery, and Penquis was honored to be part of the celebration.

Opening Doors at Bright Beginnings

At Bright Beginnings, more than 75 community members, business leaders, and friends gathered for a Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce After Hours event at the new child development center. Guests toured classrooms, met staff, learned about the program’s services, and experienced firsthand how the center is helping children learn, grow, and thrive. Excitement continues to build as the facility moves toward full operation and prepares for its Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on September 23.

Inspiring Future Leaders

Penquis President and CEO Kara Hay recently had the opportunity to speak with participants in the Cohen Institute’s 2026 High School Leadership Program. She shared an overview of Penquis’ work and impact across the region while reflecting on her personal journey to becoming a leader. The discussion also highlighted the qualities and values she believes are essential to effective leadership, helping inspire and inform the next generation of changemakers.

Summer Adventures with SAY

Throughout the summer, Penquis’ Substance Affected Youth (SAY) program has engaged local youth in creative activities, gardening projects, and community outings, including visits to Bangor Waterfront Concerts and Cole Land Transportation Museum, creating opportunities for fun, connection, and personal growth.

Together, these activities highlight the many ways Penquis continues to strengthen communities and support individuals and families across the region.

HEAP Appointments Available Now

Keeping homes warm and safe this winter starts with access to affordable heating assistance. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is now scheduling appointments for the 2026-2027 heating season for eligible residents of Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Knox counties.

Individuals and families who may qualify are encouraged to schedule an appointment early to help reduce heating costs and avoid seasonal financial strain. Visit the Penquis website to learn more about eligibility requirements, application information, and the support available to help keep your household comfortable throughout the winter months.

Who Let the Dads Out: Family Hike at Law Farm

Families looking to enjoy some time outdoors are invited to join the next Who Let the Dads Out event on Saturday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Law Farm in Dover-Foxcroft. Participants will enjoy a family-friendly hike, along with light snacks and drinks provided by the program.
