Penquis Mourns the Loss of Angel Bell

We are saddened to share the passing of our colleague, Angel Bell. She was a valued member of our Transportation team for nearly 16 years and will be remembered for her dedication and kindness. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones. You can read her full obituary and share memories and condolences here.

Celebrating Creativity, Collaboration, and Community

Guided by the theme “Color Outside the Lines: Together, we define the canvas,” Penquis’ Annual Meeting was held virtually on Tuesday, June 23, bringing together hundreds of people from across the region and beyond to reflect on the agency’s accomplishments and celebrate the creativity, collaboration, and commitment happening across programs and departments.

Building Opportunities Across the Community

This spring and early summer, Penquis programs created opportunities for connection, leadership, and shared experiences across generations and communities.

Youth Leadership in Action

Penquis Youth Programs hosted the third annual Youth Summit at Husson University, bringing together 271 students and faculty from eight schools. Students engaged in workshops on leadership, financial literacy, mental health, healthy relationships, and environmental impact—building skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging that extends beyond the event.



It was exciting to see young people bringing their ideas, energy, and leadership to the experience. We look forward to continuing this important work and offering future youth summits with the funding support of the Maine Youth Action Network (MYAN).

Connection Through Competition and Celebration

At the 2026 Special Olympics Maine State Summer Games, Charlotte White Support Services supported 13 athletes competing at the University of Maine in Orono. Penquis’ first Unified Bocce Tournament teams brought athletes and coaches together in shared competition, with one team earning gold!

From competition to celebration, the weekend created space for teamwork, connection, and shared experiences across events including track and field, field activities, and a Saturday dance.



Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches, unified partners, and families on such a memorable weekend!

Community Connections All Summer Long

Welcoming spaces for connection, conversation, and community engagement are continuing to grow across the region through the Penquis Prevention Council’s summer outreach.

This summer, the council connected with families and community members at the Summer Reading Kickoff, the Whoopie Pie Festival, the Black Fly Festival in Milo, and a potluck at Brownville Park.

Community Support in Action

With support from the Maine Association of REALTORS® Foundation, a $10,000 grant will fund emergency repairs to central heating systems.

This support helps households move into winter with greater safety, stability, and peace of mind, while also reflecting the impact of strong community partnerships. It’s a practical investment that can make a meaningful difference during the colder months.



“For many households, a broken heating system isn’t just an inconvenience; it can make a home uninhabitable. We’re grateful to the Maine REALTORS® Foundation for helping us respond quickly to these critical needs," said Jennifer Giosia, director of housing and energy services at Penquis.

Supporting Survivors

Community, Healing, and Hope

Messages of healing, hope, and support came together in a completed community mandala that reflects a shared commitment to dignity, respect, and care for survivors. Created during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Community Mandala Art Project invited community members to contribute to a meaningful expression of solidarity through Rape Response Services.

Rape Response Services also connected with community members at Pride on the Bangor Waterfront, sharing information about available support and resources.

Interested in becoming an advocate? Rape Response Services is gearing up for its advocacy training in August! This training will be offered virtually. Community partners are welcome as well! If you are interested, please email us here to get started.

Exceeding Standards

We are proud to share that Penquis, again, received the highest marks from NeighborWorks America, earning designation as an “exemplary” organization following its triennial on-site PROMPT assessment. This top rating recognizes organizations that exceed performance standards in housing services, financial management, organizational management, and board governance.

It reflects the strength of Penquis’ systems, stewardship, and partnerships. It also supports continued work alongside individuals and families throughout the region.

Help Fill the Van

Help local students start the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

Penquis invites community members to “Fill the Van” with backpacks, helping expand access to school supplies across the community.

Each backpack helps support a strong start to the school year and every contribution adds up. It’s a simple way to come together in support of students and families as a new school year begins.

Support Penquis While You Grocery Shop

During July, Penquis is part of Shaw’s Give Back Where It Counts Reusable Bag Program. The organization will receive $1 from every $3 reusable bag purchased at the Dover-Foxcroft location.
