Is Virtual Justice Just?

   This symposium is divided into two sessions, each with its own focus. The morning session, "Virtual Trials: What’s the Verdict?", will examine how virtual trials, including virtual juries, have been utilized in various jurisdictions. This session will feature Atty. Ben Crump, Atty. Peter DeFrank, Atty. Kenneth Friedman, Prof. Valerie Hans, Cornell Law School, and Prof. Maria Hartwig, John Jay College of Criminal Justice.


  The afternoon session, "Is ODR the Future of ADR?", will consider how artificial intelligence is being used in the legal system and will discuss the growing use of online dispute resolution (ODR) in Connecticut and across the country. This session will feature

  • Prof. Derek Aguiar, Asst. Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at the Univ. of Connecticut will provide a general overview of AI and examples of the use of AI in the law.
  • Prof. JJ Prescott, professor of Law and Economics at the University of Michigan Law School will moderate a panel about judicial ODR programs in other states.
  • Prof. Amy Schmitz, chair of the Ohio State Moritz College of Law Program on Dispute Resolution, will discuss ODR, and her concerns about access to justice, data analytics, and AI.

A Critical Conversation with Mónica Guzmán 


Don C. Sawyer III, Ph.D., Vice President for Equity, Inclusion, and Leadership Development at Quinnipiac University, in partnership with the Center for Dispute Resolution, launched a series of critical conversations. Monday, September 19, the first critical conversation was a moderated community discussion with Mónica Guzmán about having fearlessly curious conversations and the ways in which the QU community can be enriched by engaging in the process.

Ms. Guzmán is author of I Never Thought of it That Way. Watch her Ted Talk.

The Project for Integrative Law in Legal Education


We are pleased to announce the launch of The Project for Integrative Law in Legal Education. The Project plans a ceremonial launch on Thurs. Dec.1, 2022

To help implement the project, we are thrilled to name two Senior Fellows to lead the Project, with Carolyn Kaas: Susan Swaim Daicoff and J. Kim Wright.


What is Integrative Law?

Integrative Law is the collective name for a worldwide movement of legal professionals (Integrative Lawyers) who are rethinking and exploring what the law is and what its function should be in society. Read more about our new Integrative Law Project here.

Alumni Spotlight: We're pleased to introduce Jessica McDade!


     Jessica McDade graduated from the Quinnipiac University School of Law in 2020.McDade served on the Executive Board for the Society for Dispute Resolution, Women's Law Society, Family and Juvenile Law Society, Phi Delta Phi Honor Society, and was a contributing member of Quinnipiac Health Law Journal and the Mock Trial Team.


McDade previously worked as a community mediator in Cambridge, as well as for the Worcester District Court in Massachusetts and the New Haven District Court in Connecticut.  

   McDade is currently a mediator for the State of Connecticut for all housing-related matters. As such, McDade is able to utilize her dispute resolution skills on a day-to-day basis as she zealously helps parties with their housing disputes.

Society for Dispute Resolution

Concludes 2022 with New Competitions


On September 24, 2022, the Society for Dispute Resolution hosted its annual Intramural Competition. SDR was thrilled to host the Intramural Competition on ground, in person, for the first time since 2020! Students competed in Negotiation and Client Counseling for a chance to be invited to join the Competition Team. Following the conclusion of the Intramural, SDR is delighted to welcome 18 new members to our Competition Team! 


SDR kicked off the competition season before the school year began, competing in a Hockey-Themed Arbitration Competition, hosted virtually by Western New England School of Law, over the Fourth of July weekend. On October 15 and 16, a select team will compete in the 2022 Securities Dispute Resolution Triathlon, hosted by St. John’s School of Law and FINRA. This November, two teams will represent SDR at the ABA Negotiation Competition, and one team will compete in the ABA Arbitration Competition.
