Happy Belated Fourth of July!

Up here in Jackson, the rain has finally left us, even if it IS for a few hours.  The skies are brilliant-blue, clouds are billowy and white and the heat is on.  Literally!  But the gallery is cool and open for business. The WildQuack Duck Races & Festival will be held in the river and field  behind the gallery tomorrow (Saturday July 6), followed by fireworks at night.

To accommodate the visitors to the Festival and Fireworks,
we will be open Saturday from 9:30am to 9pm.

Stop in and say hello! And may the best duck win!

Artist Focus: Sean Stull
Sean Stull in Ireland

Painter and pastelist Sean Stull's work defines mood and atmosphere. Perhaps it is due to his love affair with Ireland, or perhaps Sean has a natural affinity creating work depicting fog and shadow.

A resident of Conway, NH, Sean graduated from Goddard College in Vermont, and then went on to study at Art Students League in NYC and at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, cementing the skills necessary to move him forward as a renown landscape artist.

His artistic roots were influenced at a young age.  His father, John DeForest Stull (1910 - 1972, Yale School of Art) was a WPA muralist for Radio City Music Hall and also a renown participant in the Ash Can School movement of NYC early in the 20th century.  Sean's mother was a children's book author, and an early advocate of teaching children through books about difficult subjects such as death and loss. Therefore, within Sean, the seeds of artistic creativity were implanted early on through the creative energy in his home.

Sean's landscapes in soft pastel are reminiscent of those created by painters from the Hudson River School and the White Mountain School, in which nature -  and man's coexistence within nature - is celebrated.  It is Sean's depictions of turbulent and moody skies that parallel closely to these important art movements, for though he seldom depicts man and man's activities within his landscapes, there is an occasional castle, church or maritime vessel in his work, inspired, no doubt, by his forays in Ireland.

From his late ex-wife, Sean discovered Ireland, her ancestral home.  He often visited there, exploring the countryside, castles and haunts.  Sean spent this past winter in Ireland, staying with his son who is a full time resident.  While working on sketches, Sean began to experiment with new work, moving away somewhat from his beloved pastel landscapes into oils that are textural, heavily-applied, organic in look and feel.  His subject matter is still the naked beauty of nature: waves crashing over rocks, riot of fall color as one enters a forest, marshland overpowered by skies suggesting a scene from The Creation.
