Oakton Day in the Park
The Greater Oakton Community Association (GOCA) will host its fourth annual Oakton Day in the Park on Sunday, Aug. 25th from 1 to 4 pm. at Oakton Community Park, 2841 Hunter Mill Road. This family-friendly event, which attracted some 600 attendees last year, will offer activities for all ages. This year’s festival will feature music by local duo Molly and Mark, food and drink from Famous Dave’s, Taco Rock, Ben & Jerry’s, and Settle Down Easy–Oakton Tasting Room. OWS Wine also will bring wines to taste.

Tysons Library Quarterly Book & Media Sale will be held from September 5th - September 8th. There is a large selection of book and media for all ages and interests!

Funding Opportunity for New Permanent Supportive Housing
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the FY2024 HUD Continuum of Care (CoC) Program Competition on July 31, 2024. Detailed information regarding this national competition can be found at the link below.
The Estimated Annual Renewal Demand (ARD) Amount Report for the FY2024 CoC Program Competition is not yet available. The Office to Prevent and End Homelessness will share details on new and renewal amounts when it is released by HUD. The Fairfax County Continuum of Care webpage will also be updated through the competition process with meeting information, application instructions and forms, and deadlines.
A full Continuum of Care Membership meeting, that will include information about new CoC funding and renewals, will be held on MS Teams, Wednesday, August 28, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. No registration is required.

Affordable Homeownership Expanded Eligibility
On Tuesday, July 16, the Board of Supervisors approved an amendment to the county’s Comprehensive Plan aimed at expanding affordable home ownership opportunities.
The Plan amendment, identified as PA 2023-CW-1CP, incorporates changes to the Housing and Land Use Elements of the Policy Plan and other comprehensive plan volumes. The amendment expands guidelines for proportionality of bedroom counts, allowing flexibility for family-sized units, it also extends the policy's geographic applicability to properties outside designated development centers.

Infant and Toddler Connection Has a New Location
The Infant and Toddler Connection of Fairfax and Falls Church (ITC) has a new location for administrative services.
ITC provides evaluations and early intervention services for infants and toddlers (up to age 3) who have a developmental delay or a diagnosis that may lead to developmental delays, relocated from the Joseph Willard Health Center (JWHC) in Fairfax and offices in Chantilly to a temporary facility in the Greenwood Building, 12015 Route 50, Fairfax, VA, 22033 – Suite 200. This will be ITC's location for the next three to four years as JWHC undergoes renovations. The new location provides staff and families with an accessible location connecting with public transportation via Route 50, 1-66 and Fairfax County Parkway, and ample parking.

Speed Camera Program Ready to Expand
A recent presentation about the Speed Camera Pilot Program to the Board of Supervisors Safety and Security Committee revealed a bevy of successes, and a plan for expansion to take place soon. The pilot, which initially launched in February 2023, reduced the average speed in nearly every test location, thus improving safety in each of the impacted school zones.

"Safe July" Initiative Results
In July, Fairfax County Police Department removed 39 impaired drivers and issued over 650 traffic charges for unsafe driving as part of the Summer Crime Prevention Initiative. This year, the initiative focused on reducing impaired driving and promoting safe driving behaviors throughout Fairfax County. The Summer Crime Prevention Initiative will continue through August.

Diversion First Annual Report
Diversion First recently released its Diversion First 2023 Annual Report, detailing its progress in 2023. Notable innovations highlighted in the report include the Co-Responder program where a mental health professional is paired with a Crisis Intervention Team officer, the Fairfax County Mental Health Dockets, the peer-based program for individuals with substance use disorders Striving to Achieve Recovery (STAR) launched by Sheriff Stacey Kincaid, and more.

Oakmont Rec Center Renovations
The Oakmont Rec Center will be getting spruced up this summer. A number of facility improvement projects are set to start after summer camps come to a close. The rec center will be closed from Monday, August 19 through Saturday, September 14. The work will include several building maintenance projects and improvements being undertaken simultaneously to minimize the length of the closure.

Contractor's Office, Shop, and Construction Vehicles Zoning Ordinance Amendment
The Department of Planning and Development will be holding two virtual community meetings regarding a potential Zoning Ordinance Amendment impacting Contractor's Offices, Shops, Construction Vehicles, and Storage Yards. The virtual meetings are scheduled for Thursday, September 5, at 12:00 pm, and Tuesday, September 10, at 7:00 pm. Draft text for this proposed Zoning Ordinance amendment will be available on the Contractor's Office, Shop and Construction Vehicles amendment webpage prior to the scheduled meetings.

Accessible Parking Zoning Ordinance Amendment
On September 26, 2023, the Board of Supervisors (Board) approved a Board Matter directing staff to evaluate the effect of newly adopted parking regulations (Parking Reimagined) on accessible parking supply. Following this Board Matter, staff from Land Development Services and the Department of Planning and Development, completed in-field parking demand surveys, research, meetings with industry stakeholders and advocacy groups, and an online survey of accessible parking users. On July 23, 2024, staff presented a report of their findings to the Board’s Land Use Policy Committee. In response to this presentation, the Board directed staff to draft a Zoning Ordinance Amendment, that ensures stability in the supply of accessible parking. Staff will be hosting two virtual community meetings to discuss this potential Zoning Ordinance Amendment. These virtual meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, at 12:00 pm., and Wednesday, September 18, at 7:00 pm.

Fairfax County Seeking Input on Active Transportation and Trail Network
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is inviting the community to learn more about and provide feedback on the proposed Active Transportation and Trail Network, a new effort that combines and updates the Bicycle Master Plan and the Countywide Trails Plan.
In order to encourage community-wide feedback, FCDOT has scheduled 12 in-person open houses around the County, as well as four virtual meetings.

Georgetown Pike Bridge "Stay Away" Weekend Traffic Shift Now Planned for August 23-26
All travel lanes on the Georgetown Pike Bridge over I-495 in McLean are scheduled to be shifted to a new northern portion of the bridge over the weekend of Aug. 23-26. Drivers are advised to avoid the Georgetown Pike and I-495 interchange area all weekend, as lanes will be reduced on Georgetown Pike and I-495 (Capital Beltway) ramps will be closed with detours in place. These closures are necessary for crews to complete paving, lane markings, ramp tie-ins and other work to implement the shift. This work previously was scheduled to occur the weekend of Aug. 16-19 but was rescheduled to Aug. 23-26, due to weather conditions last week impacting advance preparatory work.
