Moving Medicine Forward One Step at a Time — A Letter from the CEO and Dean

I hope you enjoyed the holidays safely and have returned feeling refreshed and ready to take on a new year.

There are great things in store for our enterprise in 2021. We are moving forward with future plans, upgrades and expansions across Jacksonville that put us closer to achieving our vision of being the region’s most valued health care asset. Last year, we were faced with unexpected challenges, forcing us to pivot, change processes and, in some cases, change the way we did business. However, thanks to the efforts, innovative ideas and hard work of faculty and staff, we made it through and have come out on the other side stronger...

Community Support — A Two-Way Street

Community support is a two-way street. As Duval County Public Schools has been supportive of our care providers, we have offered COVID-19 guidance to the District and parents and families during the pandemic. Pictured is some heartfelt gratitude we received from our neighbors at Andrew A. Robinson Elementary. We are truly grateful for their smiles and proud of their academic achievements.

Cardiologist Dominick Angiolillo Remains One of the World’s Most Influential Researchers

Dominick Angiolillo, MD, PhD, FACC, professor of medicine and director of cardiovascular research at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, remains one of the world’s most influential researchers, according to Clarivate.

Clarivate tracks the number of times scientists are cited in science and social science journals worldwide. Its Highly Cited Researchers list for 2020 accounts for citations over an 11-year span, from the start of 2009 through 2019, and features the scientists who rank in the top 1% of their respective field.

Angiolillo, who appears in the clinical medicine category, has published more than 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has been cited nearly 39,000 times throughout his career. He has also made the Highly Cited Researchers list in all seven years of its existence.

“In 2020, fewer than 6,200, or about 0.1%, of the world’s researchers, in 21 research fields and across multiple fields, have earned this exclusive distinction,” Clarivate wrote in a letter to Angiolillo, who is the only UF faculty member recognized in clinical medicine this year. “You are among this elite group recognized for your exceptional research influence.”

Caring for Our Communities Most Vulnerable

The Urban Health Alliance will help improve the well-being of the local community.
By: Ross Jones, MD

Nationwide, academic health centers have been using their expertise and resources to transform the health of area neighborhoods. The Urban Health Alliance will serve as a vehicle to improve the health of this community.

I will act as a convener to establish and maintain equitable, impactful and sustainable partnerships with community stakeholders. While it aims to improve the health of all residents in Jacksonville and surrounding areas, the initial focus is on the immediate communities surrounding our downtown campus, located in Health Zone 1.

The alliance’s leadership team has strong expertise in a variety of fields tied to community engagement. Lori Bilello, PhD, MBA, MHS, is nationally known for community-based health program planning and development work and has evaluated community-based programs for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Humana Foundation, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Gator Nation News
Let’s do it again! Last year, in a unified show of Gator goodness, thousands of University of Florida alumni, students, faculty, staff, friends and families set a record during Stand Up & Holler, the second annual Gator Nation Giving Day. On Feb. 18, 2021, we call upon Gators everywhere to once again stand up for UF by making a gift of any size to the college, unit, research area or program that means the most to you. Our goal this year is ambitious — 20,000 gifts in 24 hours — but every donation supports UF’s far-reaching work and our drive to the Top 5 of public universities.
Almost a year after COVID-19 turned The Gator Nation and rest of the world upside down, UF is looking for a return to the familiar this spring — or at least as close to it as the pandemic will safely allow...
Homecomings are a cherished tradition at schools throughout the nation. The origins of the homecoming tradition are hotly debated, but the first homecoming celebrations in the United States were held sometime around 1910...

In the best of times, health and behavioral changes can be hard to make and stick to long term. Compound that with the complications of the pandemic, such as working from home, homeschooling children, avoiding social events and the like, and it may feel impossible to attempt and keep virtually any New Year’s resolution. This is why a change of approach is in order. Here are tips to consider...
