A NOTE FROM JIM

Welcome to Why3Works.

For years, I’ve worked alongside educators, employers, workforce organizations, and community partners doing remarkable work. I’ve also seen how hard it can be to connect those efforts.

A student has an experience but isn’t sure what comes next. An employer wants to help but doesn’t know where to start. Partners agree on a direction, then struggle to turn the conversation into action.

That’s why I started Why3Works Education & Workforce Consultants: to help people connect ideas, partnerships, and resources so more opportunities lead somewhere.

We help clarify the challenge, connect the right people, and carry the work forward—from designing career experiences to strengthening pathways and coordinating partnerships.

Each month, I’ll share a perspective, a practical tool, and a look at work in progress. Thanks for being part of the first issue.

FEATURED PERSPECTIVE

Who Improves a System

That Nobody Owns?

A school graduates students. A college awards credentials. An employer fills a position. Each can succeed, yet people can still struggle to move from one opportunity to the next.

My recent LinkedIn article asks who is responsible for improving what happens between organizations. When a solution requires changes in resources, responsibilities, or how work gets done, what happens after everyone leaves the meeting?

A TOOL FOR YOUR TEAM

A Readiness Check-Up for Your Program

Readiness means having the knowledge, skills, experiences, relationships, and support to take a meaningful next step. For a program, the question is how intentionally it builds and connects those conditions.

Are we creating opportunities or simply providing activities?

Can we demonstrate how the activities and experiences we offer expand participants' awareness, influence their decisions, and prepare them for meaningful next steps?

Are our learning experiences intentionally connected?

How do exposure, exploration, education, and real-world experiences build upon one another rather than operate as independent programs or events?

Are participants developing readiness that can be demonstrated?

Beyond attendance, participation, and completion, what evidence shows participants are developing and applying the knowledge, skills, confidence, and competencies needed to advance?

Do we know where participants lose momentum?

Where do participants encounter barriers, experience disconnected services, or struggle to transition between learning, experiences, and opportunities? Who is responsible for helping them navigate those transitions?

Can we demonstrate that our programs lead somewhere?

What evidence connects participation to meaningful next opportunities, including continued education, credentials, employment, advancement, or other defined measures of success?

Use it: Mark each Clear / Needs Work / Don’t Know and add one piece of evidence. Choose one gap, name who will lead the improvement, and agree on a next step.

Then answer three closing questions:

Where is our greatest disconnect between activity and participant progress?

What evidence do we need to better understand that disconnect?

What is one change we could make in the next 90 days?

WORK IN PROGRESS / ELAP

Building a pathway into early learning.

The Early Learning Apprenticeship Pathway (ELAP) is being developed to connect education, paid work experience, and career advancement in early learning. The goal is to help people enter and grow in the profession while helping providers build their workforce.

Where things stand: We’ve made progress on apprenticeship standards, pathway design, and education alignment. We’re strengthening the partnerships, organizational structure, and financial model needed for long-term implementation before moving forward with formal apprenticeship approval.

ELAP puts the purpose of Why3Works into practice: connecting education, employers, and community resources around a shared challenge. I’ll share more as the work develops.

What's That One Thing You Wish You Could Get Done?

We all have that one project, challenge, or event we'd love to tackle but just don't have the time, resources, or capacity to make happen.

What's yours?
