On Saturday, June 21st, we gather in the spirit of freedom, resilience, and shared joy for a Juneteenth picnic celebration on the grounds of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Rooted in the rich history of African American communal life, where resistance met joy and hope endured in fellowship, we come together to honor the past and celebrate the present.
This family-friendly, outdoor gathering is a vibrant expression of community and care, reminding us that joy, too, is a sacred act. We celebrate Juneteenth not only as a historic milestone but as a living tradition of cultural strength and spiritual vitality. In this sacred green space, surrounded by the beauty of the Cathedral’s gardens, we lift up a vision of freedom that is rooted in love, in belonging, and the flourishing of all people.
We give thanks for our community partners and all those who help weave the pastoral fabric that sustains us. All are welcome. Let us come together - in joy, in memory, and in faith - as one community, united in purpose and celebration.

Featuring the sweet sounds of DJ Stormin’ Norman, lawn games, snacks, and treats, all for free in the beautiful lawns and gardens of the Cathedral. Bring a blanket and your favorite picnic items - we'll have food and drinks to share, as well as extra blankets! Registration is encouraged but not required.

Eucharistic Minister and Visitor Training

Training will be conducted for Lay Eucharistic Ministers from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm and Lay Eucharistic Visitors from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm and lunch served at 12:00 pm. The fee is $15.00 per person and you can pay by check or cash (the check should be made out to the Diocese of New York). Check in will begin at 9:00 am with light breakfast snacks, coffee and tea. Middle School Anti-Racism Pilgrimage to Philipsburg Manor, NY

As part of its commitment to racial reconciliation, our Diocese’s Anti-Racism Committee is offering a new day trip for Middle School-age youth (entering 6-9th grades Fall '25) to Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow New York. This provides a Hands-On history lesson of a late 17th/ early 18th century milling, farming and trading compound owned by an Anglo-Dutch family of merchants, tenanted by farmers of diverse European backgrounds and operated by enslaved Africans.
Each parish group should have at least 2 adults accompany youth (beyond their own children) per Safe Church. Free admission and a lunch onsite included. Please register by June 23rd, 2025, and click the registration page for details and dietary choices.

Join us for the Jonathan Daniels and Martyrs of Alabama Pilgrimage and to visit nearby civil rights sites. The pilgrimage commemorates Blessed Jonathan Daniels, who was martyred 60 years ago, as a civil rights worker, in Haynesville, Alabama. Traditionally, the Antiracism Committee takes high school-age diocesan youth on the pilgrimage. This year, we are adding adults to the trip. Sustainable Development Goals Grant

The Sustainable Development Goals Fund (SDGF) aims to provide support for one-year mission projects between congregations, schools, and mission networks within the Episcopal Diocese of New York (EDNY) and global entities outside of the EDNY. Grants will be awarded for projects that directly address one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Effectiveness, accountability, and sustainability (addressing one or more SDGs, as well as financial sustainability) will be essential criteria that applicants must identify, define, and measure. The Anti-Racism Committee (ARC) is planning a Diocesan visit to the Museum of African American History and Culture, in Washington, DC, in the fall of 2025. The organizers would like to see what the interest is from the Diocesan community and you can sign up on the form below to be on the Interested List. We will contact you with further details as the plan develops. This is not a commitment to go on the trip, it is registering interest and finding out more about it.
Entrance tickets will be reserved at no cost. The fee for bus transportation is likely to be $150. Middle school and high school youth must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Girls ages 12–18 are invited to apply to the 2025 Saint Thomas Girl Chorister Course - an immersive week of music, learning, and community at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue.
Participants live in residence at the Saint Thomas Choir School and take part in a full schedule of rehearsals, liturgical services, music theory and history classes, and private vocal coaching. The week also includes group outings to cultural landmarks and experiences around New York City. Anti-Racism Workshop

This workshop aims to provide awareness of how the sin of racism impacts all our lives, and how we unconsciously and consciously participate in racist systems. The concept of race and its legacy is examined from scientific and historical evidence. Dialogue is the foundation which includes group exercises. The viewing of videos and online exercises is pre-work assigned to participants.
Church is accessible by public transportation.
The workshop meets the diocesan requirement for antiracism training which is expected to be fulfilled by all clergy and lay leaders elected or appointed to a diocesan position. Every four years all are required to re-certify by taking a workshop or alternative options – click here for details.
Of the hundreds of workshop participants, 98% have found the workshop useful in their work and daily lives. Registration closes on August 27th.
