What's Special about SpecialSpecial Events?

As we have three upcoming special events, here are three reflections on what makes a special event special:

Variety: you get to enjoy the intimacy of a dinner, the glamour of a gala, the fresh air of a hike, the swing of a golf club, or the delights of a festive concert - an amazing choice of events for every taste.

Meaningful: by mixing and mingling as a guest, or as a volunteer on a planning committee, you spend meaningful time with like-minded others.

Supporting our mission: your auction items, sponsorship, purchased tickets and donations contribute directly to our Programs - providing compassionate care to individuals facing progressive life-threatening illness; respite care to allow their caregivers a needed break; and grief support both before and after the death of a loved one.

What makes a special event special? Every one of you who attend; every one of you who give so generously of your time and talents; and every one of you who care deeply about the welfare of those in our community facing the end of life.

A new look at 'Death & Dying'DeathDying
By Rayne Johnson

Many people live in fear of death and don't want to think about it - but facing our mortality can inspire us to live our lives more fully. It's time to open up more conversations around death & dying, which is the intention of the 'Raven' Death & Dying film series, as well as Death Cafes and workshops held in and around Edmonton.

The first of the film series was the provocative: 'Death Makes Life Possible', featuring Deepak Chopra and Marilyn Schlitz. It explores the mysteries of life and death from a variety of perspectives and world traditions.

Dr. Dean Ornish says it well: "Deeply personal, yet universal in scope, Death Makes Life Possible is not just about how to die peacefully and gracefully; more importantly, it describes how to fully live."

Next was 'Griefwalker' by Stephen Jenkinson, another thought-provoking film with a close look at death, as well as how we grieve. It shows Jenkinson in teaching sessions with doctors and nurses, in counselling sessions with dying people and their families, and in meditative and often very straight forward conversations. Available to watch on the NFB website.

Our discussion period after the films have shown a  strong desire among people to speak about their experiences of death and grief, as well as a growing hunger for the need to redefine death.

Join us for our next film: 'A Family Undertaking' April 12th, 2015. Show begins at 1pm - stay afterwards for the discussion!

Hike for Hospice Palliative CareHikeforhospice
10am, Sunday, May 3

This unique national  event brings together organizations working collectively in hospice palliative care, not only to raise much needed funds but also to raise awareness of the many challenges faced by hospice palliative care and to promote the phenomenal work that volunteers and

professionals in the field perform daily.

100% of the funds raised in Edmonton will stay in Edmonton, supporting hospice care programs in and around the city, ensuring that more members of our community receive the end-of-life, respite and bereavement care they wish for.

The Hike is a fun event, with teams such as the Pilgrims Pacers, the Hiking Kings & The Volunteer Victors! already up and fundraising!

Great News Just In... we've already raised over $1,000.00 - Way to Go, Teams!
