Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute

#TributeThursday – Donor Spotlight

It’s #TributeThursday, and we’re featuring immigrant histories from the Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute Project. This week, we are sharing the story of Vincenzo and Maria Therese Marchese, who immigrated from San Nicola da Crissa, Calabria, in 1952 and 1956, respectively.

“Like many Italian post-war immigrants, my father Vincenzo Marchese arrived at Pier 21 in 1952 and travelled to Montreal where he worked as a bricklayer. In 1954, he moved to Toronto where he worked many back-breaking jobs in construction, including the railroad. As his English improved, he secured jobs at Toronto Carpet and Dominion Paper Box. In 1955, he returned to Italy to marry my mother, Maria Teresa (Teresina) Zambrano. At six months pregnant, she travelled by ship to join him. I was born in Toronto in 1956, and my sister and brother followed.”

Read their full story on our Immigrant Map and explore all the immigrant experiences.
