Villa Charities Hosts Send-Off Event for

Special Olympics Team Canada

Italian Community Welcomed the Canadian Athletes

Before Their Departure for Turin, Italy

Villa Charities and the Italian community proudly hosted a vibrant celebration on Tuesday, March 4th, to send off Special Olympics Team Canada to Turin, Italy for the Special Olympics World Winter Games, taking place March 8 – 15, 2025. The Columbus Centre was filled with the sound of cheers and well wishes for the inspiring athletes before their departure to represent Canada on the world stage.

The celebratory event with 400 participants commenced with the arrival of the

Special Olympics Flame of Hope, followed by the spirited parade of athletes, coaches and staff, whose beaming smiles reflected their delight at the community's warm welcome. The team was greeted by energetic DanzArts Toronto dancers and proudly flanked by members of the Associazione Nazionale Alpini Gruppo Vaughan Autonomo. TSN’s Marissa Roberto and Luca Celebre co-hosted the event, which featured captivating performances by Lucia Cesaroni, Soprano, and singer-songwriter Nicolina. Attendees also enjoyed a fun, interactive Italian language lesson led by Mauro Carlini and Enrico Rennella from CHIN TV/Radio, providing the athletes with essential phrases for their time in Italy.

Special Olympics Team Canada 2025 snowshoer Alec Baldwin gave a rousing performance of the Canadian national anthem and Lucia Cesaroni led the singing of Italy’s national anthem.

Distinguished speakers, including Luca Zelioli, Consul General of Italy in Toronto; the Honourable Toni Varone, Senator; the Honourable Marni McBean, Senator; Adam van Koeverdan, MP for Milton, Olympian and Special Olympics Champions Network Member; Marco De Vuono, President and CEO of Villa Charities Inc.; Bob Sacco, CIBPA Toronto; Domenico Servello, Centro Scuola; Sam Ciccolini, Masters Insurance Ltd.; Charity Sheehan, Chef de Mission, Special Olympics Team Canada 2025; and Special Olympics Team Canada 2025 alpine skier Matthew Fields, all shared their enthusiastic support for the athletes and emphasized the unifying power of sport.

Following the public celebration, the athletes, coaches, and team staff enjoyed a celebratory dinner at Boccaccio Ristorante.

Villa Charities extends our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated supporters and partners, including Centro Scuola, CIBPA Toronto, Hon. Consiglio Di Nino, Masters Insurance Ltd., and Hon. Toni Varone, Senator. Special thanks are also extended to Pizza Nova and Pensieri Dolci for donating treats, and to CHIN Radio/TV for their promotional support. Thanks also to organizing committee members Senator Toni Varone, Con Di Nino, Sam Ciccolini, Pal Di Iulio and Susana Petti, and the Villa Charities team who worked very hard to bring the event to life, led by Mary Pompili, Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Most importantly, we express our sincere appreciation to the athletes, coaches, and staff of Special Olympics Team Canada 2025 for the opportunity to share in their journey and celebrate our Canadian pride together.
