Villa Charities Awarded Grant to Launch New Tech Project for Their Seniors
Are you an older adult living in the Villa Charities apartments and you want to connect virtually with your family, but don’t know how? Or do you need to schedule a virtual doctor’s appointment but don’t have a smart device?

Beginning in September, Villa Charities is launching a new initiative called [Re]Connected Seniors, where we will lend qualified senior participants an iPad, if you tell us how you want to use it and what skills you need to develop to be successful. [Re]Connected Seniors is a project created by Villa Charities that strives to include seniors and older adults who feel isolated in their community due to the pandemic and lack access to digital tools and skills.

“While so many Canadians have taken for granted their digital literacy and accessibility during the pandemic, new studies show how social isolation caused by digital disconnection decreases health outcomes,” explains Anthony DiCaita, President and CEO, Villa Charities Inc. “[Re]Connected Seniors increases health outcomes and helps our senior residents to stay engaged, and build the necessary skills and connections to become more self-sufficient in society, while keeping safe."

Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund and with funds administered through the United Way of Greater Toronto, Villa Charities will use the $35,000 government grant they were awarded to purchase iPads and hire a project coordinator to manage the iPad lending library, check in on project participants and facilitate monthly virtual group learning offerings between September 2020 and March 2021.

Seniors who already own a tablet or smartphone but want to develop digital skills with other seniors will be encouraged to participate in the online group trainings. TechServeTO will also continue to offer free one-on-one tech support for all older adults on or connected to the Villa Charities campus and the project. Villa Charities will be providing free Wi-Fi in the common rooms of VCI’s apartment buildings with further details to be confirmed.

To register for any aspect of the project, please complete the online application form or call TechServeTO toll-free at 1-888-418-4771 to get assistance with filling out the form. If the form needs to be completed by a family member or a friend, please indicate so in the designated area on the form.

Please note that this pilot project will only be available to current residents of
Casa Del Zotto and Caboto Terrace at this time.
