Colonoscopies were once the standard screening tool for colon cancer and other bowel diseases, but the procedure’s invasive nature kept many away from the doctor’s office (despite most insurance companies covering the procedure). Today, doctors often recommend at-home stool tests and virtual colonoscopies, which use X-rays to produce images, for normal-risk individuals who do not have a family history of colorectal cancer as a colonoscopy alternative. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to talk to your physician about new preventative screening options available in Southwest Florida. Someone knocked at my door last evening. When I opened it, I saw a guy from Domino's holding a chicken pepperoni pizza with extra cheese and onion rings.
"I haven't ordered any pizza," I said. "This must be a mistake."
"No, it's not," he replied. "Your neighbor forgot his Facebook password and wanted to show you what he was eating for dinner."
