JIBBOOM CLUB #1

Join us on Tuesday, when Navy veteran and NLMS trustee Steve Hambey provides the enlisted man's perspective of life in the Navy Submarine Corps.

Steve Hambey writes: During my 20 yrs. in the Navy, and literally spending seven years underwater, I missed numerous birthdays and anniversaries. My Navy career included four nuclear powered submarines homeported from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to Groton, Connecticut and other ports along the way. While I don't miss the stress and the time away from family, I would do it again.

Jibboom is not a club! Sponsored by the Maco Family Fund, Jibboom is friendly gathering that's free and open to all. Every month we provide a speaker, refreshments, and a congenial atmosphere in which to share in an individual's experiences of the life maritime. Please come and bring a friend!

every Saturday & Sunday at 11:45 year-round, or by appointment.

This week at the Custom House...

Lately, while up late working on grant proposals, I've discovered the waterfront gets lively at night. I've become newly obsessed by the HarborCam.

Early last week the Shaw's Cove swing bridge froze! Fixing it over two nights entailed a marvelous illumination and brought out an army of workers to scale the structure, wade underneath the rails, and press against the trestles as trains rumbled through. A friend's train ride Wednesday night was three hours late -- the possibly reason was right there on HarborCam, where cranes and crews -- blasted by serious floodlights -- worked away on the tracks.

In the daytime tugs tote platforms and pilings out past the Eagle. Friday afternoon a ferry just stopped: They lowered a small boat, which no sooner sped off towards town than it floundered a bit then turned around to be hoisted back up on the ferry deck. It appears they'd gotten the engine going...

Sometimes, you could liken the HarborCam to Slow TV. Still viewers now number 4.9m+! For me, it's mesmerizing.
