What's Up KEA?

Lesson Plans: What's our Responsibility ?

Many concerns have come to the KEA office regarding lesson plans. Building leaders have required weekly lesson plans to be turned in, required that lesson plans be uploaded on OneNote, and required written daily lesson plans for paraeducators. KEA believes that this is an increase in workload; and therefore, it is subject to bargaining. KEA has submitted a "Demand to Bargain" to the district. It is our position that lesson plans are written for the teacher, and not for the building leader to evaluate. School Board Policy requires that a teacher keep lesson plans. The policy does not dictate that they must be submitted or collected at any time. So, if your building administrator is requiring them, you will need to continue until this is resolved. We hope to have it done by early next week.

FSA Accounts

As we prepare to switch to the SEBB, you may want to check the remaining balance on your FSA account. Unlike years past, NOTHING can carry over from your current FSA account into the new SEBB plans. So, check you balances and spend your dollars! One option is to shop on the FSA online store. They carry approved items like Band-Aids, glasses, and even sleep apnea machines. They also carry many other items to spend your dollars.

FYI- all procedures or purchases must be completed by
October 31st. If you have receipts that you plan to submit for reimbursement, you will need to submit them by
December 31st.
Speaking of SEBB...

Hopefully your building rep has given you information about the SEBB and the roll out plan for this year. The District and KEA will no longer bargain your healthcare plans. Insurance providers will now be done through the State of Washington. The district will most likely not be holding any insurance fairs, but the state will be providing them shortly. The information can be found on the SEBB papers that the reps put in your boxes. Phone numbers can also be found on the same papers if you have questions about coverage.
Contract Corner

Dear Contract Corner,

My principal wants to change my job assignment. School has already begun. Can he do that? I had my room all set up for fourth grade!

Signed,

Frustrated in Kent

Dear Frustrated in Kent,

In Article IV, Section 4.7.c of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), it is states: "Prior to the end of the school year, principals will determine teaching assignments and make the information available to employees. If, after this date, it is determined that a change in an assignment must be made due to changes in staffing, enrollment, adjustment of master schedule (secondary schools) or other changing building needs, the employee will be notified as soon as possible, but no later than the first contracted work day, of the employee's new assignment."

The first working day referred to above is the first workshop day in August, not the first day students arrive. If your principal makes the change prior to the first workshop day, it is allowable according to the contract. If you are a PE teacher, Music Specialist or Librarian - no matter your title - this language applies to you, as well.
